Follow the Prospects: Shawn Pleffner, 1B
« Topic Start: May 31, 2014, 10:59:09 PM »
Position: First Baseman
Bats: Left, Throws: Right
Height: 6' 5", Weight: 225 lb.

Born: August 17, 1989 in Washington, District of Columbia, US (Age 24.287)
High School: Arundel HS (Gambrills, MD)
School: University of Tampa (Tampa, FL)

Drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 26th round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of Tampa (Tampa, FL).

Now at high-A Potomac, seems to be a Chris Marerro type, little power but hits for high average.  Batting .299/.341/.386 with 1 HR so far, only had 4 HRs in 101 games in Hagerstown in 2013 but hit .288/.386/.399

now at .311 / .366 / .429 with 2HRs in 194 PAs, only one error at 1B in 422 chances.

Keep an eye on this guy.

2HRs in 194 PAs doesn't seem like a lot for a first baseman

yeah, he hasn't really hit for power yet, only 4 last year in about double the number of PAs, but at his size you'd expect the power will come.  If it doesn't, i'll settle for Sean Casey. :)

James Loney? I wouldn't want a first baseman without power, but that's just me, maybe trade bait?

doesn't look like the power has developed once he got to AA.  Still gets on at a respectable clip.  Seems to have taken a step back.  I don't know if Marmolejos may move ahead of him.  Thoughts?

To be totally honest, there's not a single 1B prospect in the system right now. I was hoping Simonetti would be something, but he's struck out at least once in 20 out of 25 games... (and 4 in a game, twice). It's early for him. Right now, Marmolejos is probably the #1 1B in the system, with Skole (ugh) being pretty close. Next would be Matt Page? Who the hell knows. Most guys playing 1B at the lower levels are just bodies, really. This system desperately needs a power hitter. I think Juan Soto will be that guy, hopefully!

Pleffner is probably going to DH now that he's off the DL and "The Orange" is in AA.
