Maybe more people would have attended, if the Nationals had not handed away the previous two games to the other team.

This game is being repeated on MASN at 11:30 pm tonight.

Pretty impressive. I think the weather has a big part in that, but a ton of Nats fans came out to see the team play.

[...]1. Why is there a Cal Ripken quote on a plaque in Nats Park?[...]

Something about which I have long been curious, along with the inclusion of Edward Bennett Williams (the Orioles owner who unilaterally declared his club to be a 'regional franchise') in the Hall of Stars. If I bought Nats Park, both of these would be torn down with my bare hands - we are not a dependency of Baltimore!

there's a Joe Dimaggio quote in the tunnel leading from the locker room to the bench.  Great quotes transcend teams. :)

Peter Angelos' spineless flunky is on nowhere near the same level as DiMaggio.

  If you ever get to that point I volunteer to help you tear it down. It'd be nice if you could also find a way to ban all orioles fans from the stadium as well.

Cal Ripken is the most recent icon in MLB - someone who passed one of the games historic standards - particularly because the consecutive game mark set by Lou Gehrig was thought to be a record that would never be broken.

A few random thoughts after visiting the park:

1. Why is there a Cal Ripken quote on a plaque in Nats Park?  He is amazing no doubt but if they allowed a spot for all the amazing players to have quotes on their walls there would be no space left.  Just seems odd.

How many other stadiums around the league have anything Cal Ripken related, I am just curious?  I would wager not many, if any.  Well besides OPACY.

I hate the Orioles, but Cal has been extremely active in youth baseball in Maryland and Virginia. I'm not sure if there's another college league in the area anymore with Clarke Griffith going under.

He was a prominent Redskins owner.

He was a prominent Redskins owner.

True, but he is already well recognised for this at the Redskins' home ground, FedEx Field. He does not deserve to be honoured in the home MLB ballpark of the city he and his successors have worked to keep baseball out of. We may as well honour Bob Short up there (after all he did own the Senators) while we're at it.

Largest home opening series ever!

 :old:  2005!! - 116,002 vs 2014 115,002.

(what's with those xxx,002 endings, anyway?)

And for the last two of those 2005 games, the Orioles were at home same dates drawing 48k versus the Yankees, draining away from OUR fan base.

It's a Washington sports hall of fame thing they brought here from RFK.  Was EBW a greedy owner out to fatten his wallet?  I'm shocked.

He fought against baseball in Washington, and therefore does not deserve recognition in any positive capacity at an active Washington major league baseball park.

Perhaps the scoreboard said largest Nats Park opening series?  I didn't read too closely apparently.

Simple. Just adjust it by adding two to the total number (hammonds and CALSGR8).

that's probably what they meant. When the yankees played at RFK in 2006 attendance for the three game series eclipsed 135K. The Nats also drew over 120K when the yankees played at Nats Park in 2012.

...also the Red Sox series in 2009 that drew an aggregate 125,032 - the individual fixtures of this series remain the 10th, 15th and 16th highest attendances ever registered at Nats Park.
