Why?

i love mine, even though i don't need it too much right now. i don't have cable, and don't plan on getting it again anytime soon. it's great because right now i can cast HBO GO to my TV (my PS4 doesn't have HBOGO) and casting is great for youtube videos/netflix/any other video app pretty much. watchESPN, also not on PS4, casts as well.

once i get another apartment and have a TV in the living room and my bed room, a chromecast will be in one and my PS4 in the other.

also i love being able to cast my music straight to the TV when i get back from a run and am changing/getting ready to go out

i dont know anything about the amazon stick, but just like my chromecast a lot. does the amazon stick have screen casting? that's a cool feature that i have used to throw a screen from my computer/phone on the TV.

all that crap is pretty much the same, but i'd put my money in chromecast before amazon considering a lot of amazon products (fire HD, phone, etc.) are not widely used and are mainly for the Amazon universe. i have a google phone/tablet so having a chromecast makes synergy between them much easier than with Amazon, who wouldn't let me use google music

it has screen casting, I was just replying to you're asking Nathan why he wouldn't just get a chromecast- the amazon stick has better internals and is cheaper - I have a nexus 5 and use a fire tablet- my wife has an iphone and uses an nexus 7- all play nicely with our fire tv

Amazon stick does have screen casting. At least it claims to.

I'll probably be buying one to replace my Roku sooner or later. I have Amazon Prime and therefore Amazon video, so it's the natural choice for me.

If only I could get Nationals baseball... I'd cut the cord right away.

Toss in a VPN and you can.  To me the problem isn't the workarounds needed to use MLB.TV, it's the fact that MLB.TV is way too expensive for what it is.  You're going to need internet anyway and throwing in TV with it probably doesn't cost any more than a full year of MLB.TV.

In my fantasy world, I have an ala carte TV plan with just two channels and the major "free" networks.

Picked up a Chromecast from the local Best Buy just for the hell of it.  Halfway through the setup I discover that it doesn't support 5GHz band, only 2.4GHz :?

MLB is expensive, but given it, Netflix, and Amazon (which I already have), plus OTA HD, and I'd have everything I need.

MASN is on Comcast basic cable. Maybe I should try going to that.

Tossing in a VPN slows things down, no?

Depends on the VPN service and your definition of "slow"

Without VPN:

With VPN:

(manually selected the same server for 2nd test since the VPN was going through NJ)
