bourbon county stout  by goose island.  almost fifteen percent alcohol.  it was good.  kinda sweet.  viscous. I like  yeti  and  dragons milk better

Have you had the coffee stout yet?

I liked this year's BC Stout over last year's version.  Was a little bit smoother, but still had the "boozyness" to it that I like.  There have been a few bourbon stouts I've had that taste way too much like straight alcohol and not as smooth as a good bourbon.  Yeti is good, but I don't think it compares to BC Stout.

Also, I've learned to throw out the ABV numbers.  When I first got into craft, I always figured higher was better.  I've had a ton of craft from the lightest of lights in the 4.0 ABV range up to the Sam Adams Utopias and imported Barley Wines (28-60 ABV) and I can honestly say that my favorites range from 6-12, but most fall into the 7-9 category.

I just took another trip up to Vermont to get more Heady Topper, but I couldn't find any the weekend of Thanksgiving.  It really sucks that they don't have a retail outlet anymore, and hopefully on my next trip up there, the new retail operation will be open.  Still, the Prohibition Pig in downtown Waterbury, VT is a damn good bar.

If you ever find yourself with too much HT let me know!

My wonderful wife (her being a Packer fan is excused for the time being) brought home some Shiner Bock.

It doesn't exactly grow on trees here in suburban Richmond...

How did week 17 treat you?   ;)

Happy they resigned Cutler?

Has anyone tried the Dogfish 61 Minute IPA ?

http://www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/the-brews/year-round-brews/sixty-one.htm

I've heard it is very unique.  Not like their other 60, 75, 90, 120 etc.

I saw a bottle at a good beer store in Kitty Hawk last night.  The owner says it has been selling well.

I like red and white http://www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/the-brews/occassional-rarities/red-white.htm so I'd assume the taste would be along the same lines (with an ipa replacing the whitbier.

I bought a four pack here in PA.  The first one I had was very blech.  Almost tasted skunky which I know it wasn't.  Actually looking forward to trying it again.

this week I've been drinking bottles of a cherry stout from michigan at CCSP.  Honestly, I forget the name (hey, I use a glass) but will post.  The funny thing about this one is that the write up describing actually sounds right.  It taste a little like a dark chocolate cherry truffle.  Not killer sweet, but cherry with chocolate notes.

That must be Bell's.

After a few beers, none of us can remember the name of the beer - whether drinking from a glass or pouring into mouth right from the tap

Bell's Cherry Stout is a great beer.  Sometimes it is too sweet and cherry other times I absolutely love it and drink a few too many.

If you guys can find it by you, the limited release Brooklyn Black Ops was very good this year.  Bourbon barrel aged stout, but not to harsh and quite smooth on bourbon flavor.

512 Cascabel Cream Stout finally got its seasonal release here in Texas... my favorite Texas beer and one of my top five beers period. Y'all should come down and visit. Creamy rich milk stout with a juuust-right hit of hot chili peppers. Just freaking delicious.

If any brew could get me to Texas, and it would have to be winter, early spring or late fall, it would be some of the Jester King sours they are putting out.  Supposedly first class.

Now would be the time, but I don't know much about sours.

I just tried Mississippi's Lazy Magnolia Jefferson Stout, and it was really very impressive indeed. Lazy Magnolia's pecan beer is very good too. Clearly a brewery to watch/drink intently.

The chick that Blue Jacket Brewery hyped up as their brew master has quit.  And based on this article they are going for fancy gimmicks (aka avant-garde aka over-priced crap) instead of just brewing a drinkable beer.

Quote
A fourth, a Belgian-style saison, is expected to debut at the end of the week. What makes this last beer unique, Engert says, is that it features a minute amount of mastic, a potent oil extracted from the resin of a Mediterranean tree. Originally used in chewing gum, mastic has been incorporated into all kinds of food and drinks in Greece, Engert says. It tastes like, he adds, mint, lemon balm and anise. A little goes a long way.

That is not a parody, that is a real life excerpt.

from reading that,  my take away is that they are in way over their heads- the guy they replaced the competent person with was a barrista/coffee roaster?  Their ambitions just seem crazy

the group remains committed to brewing 20 original house brands and five cask beers, not to mention barrel-aging brews and collaborating with other breweries around the country.
that's putting them in Sierra Nevada /dog fish head territory,  all without a master Brewer?  I'll probably be avoiding them until they get their act together
