anyone catch lavaar and dukes last night?  Arrington was noting that Harper just seems to not be very happy, whereas Trout is loose and easy going.  Trout seemed to have fun with the harper comparison, Harper was annoyed by it.

I'd probably be a bit annoyed too. It would be like comparing Miguel Cabrera to a AAAA player. There is no comparison. It also doesn't help that Harper is struggling to start the season and Trout is on pace for like 13 WAR.

Because Harper knows he should be better. He was taken number 1. He was on SI. He's not living  up to the hype. He's overrated.

To get back to "Bryce is a very good player" instead of seeming to dump on the guy, what do you all think he'll end up with as a slash line, including his poor start?

I say he turns it on and we're left to wonder another offseason if he'll ever stretch out "Good Bryce" over a full season.

I say .290/.380/.520 end of season stats. That requires .295/.390/.545 from here on out.

I think you might be generous, I could see .280/.360/.500 and that would be a successful season (assuming you hit the restart button on the hype and just view him as a regular young player)

Not that Arrington knows what he's talking about but let's say there a measure of truth in it, do you think that has to do with frustration over failing to meet high expectations (his expectations for himself are probably even higher than what others expect of him) or could there be something else going on?

It's the old John Thompson point (paraphrase), "Since he became a baseball prodigy, no one ever told him to shut the hell up and sit down."   Williams has and he's not playing very well.     That's quite a mix for a young man.

Maybe it's just because I've been reading a lot of books focused on the minors lately, but it seems like having to fight for you position and work your way up against the odds may be good for a player

He has never shown any evidence that his IQ is above 15.

I think it's even more basic: taking the time to learn how to play baseball is good for a player.

I could see him playing at that level from here on out with a lower batting average.

But he would know what it's like to be an unhappy player on a team.

Arrington.   Sorry, I hope nobody thought I was saying that Harper is THAT dumb.   I'm on record as saying he isn't very bright but he's Einstein compared to Arrington.

If I had to pick one to go on Jeopardy, I wouldn't send the cab to Bryce's house.    :)

Send the cab to both homes and you will get this:

kind of like when a high school valedictorian goes to Harvard and finds out everyone is smarter than him, it's a tough adjustment.

I remember the speech the President of W&M gave to my daughter's incoming class:  "All of you were in the top 10% of your high school class...when you leave here, 90% of you won't be."

He also knows what it's like not to live up to expectations.
