Why do we need a veteran lefty bat? How about someone who can hit instead?

You've been reading some of my old ALR posts?     ;)

Bothers me a bit that they are talking us up so much...shades of "World Series or Bust."

I think we're all a little gun-shy after last year.

I'm prepared for the letdown, I've seen it all my life from the Caps, Skins, Wizards, and Nats. However, when there's time to be hyped and excited I live for it. We're already improved by subtracting Haren and adding Fister.

Let's not get carried away here.  The Nats still have holes to fill, most obviously with the bench and bullpen.  If I were GM and I wanted to hedge my bets for postseason contention, I would sign a bat somewhere.  The "upgrades" I see out there are Cano, Ellsbury, Choo, Beltran, Napoli and Kemp.  Kemp is a hard sell given the injury history the past two seasons and obviously the Dodgers aren't going to just give him away.  Even without one of those guys, the Nats probably have an above average offense and one of the top three rotations.

I'd sign Boone Logan, promote Solis to the pen, eat half of Soriano's yearly salary (4.5 Million) and trade him to the Orioles for a prospect, sign Eric O'Flaherty and go with the following bullpen: Logan (L), Solis (L), O'Flaherty (L), Stammen (R), Ohlendorf (R), Storen (R), Clippard (R).  Clippard is the closer and if Ohlendorf falters even a bit, Roark is brought up as a replacement.  Leave guys like Matheus and Garcia in AAA to either bounce back or complete rehabbing and use them as insurance if someone underperforms or gets hurt.

Bench should be Moore, Hairston, Espinosa/Walters, Brown and sign Yorvit Torrealba as the backup catcher.

get a lefty for the pen and we're sorted, offense will be better (it can't be worse) and we have an amazing rotation. i have high hopes next season will live up to the expectations of last year

I'm still very worried about the fifth starter.

Kidding, kidding.

This rotation is now officially stacked. Let Det, Jordan, Karns, and Roark fight it out for the last spot and provide depth.

As for the offense, I don't think Rizzo is going to do much.

Sorry it had to be your other team getting messed over.  I wonder if the writing was kind of on the wall that Fister would be the one moved when he only pitched once in the ALCS?  I'm not so surprised that he was the one to go out of Scherzer / Fister / Porcello, but I just don't think the return was that much.

Dombrowski must have a lot of belief in Ray for this to work at all for the Tigers.  Lombo is really just Don Kelly without the speed (ok, better contact skills), and he's not starting at 2d ahead of Kinsler or 3d ahead of Castellanos.  He really is just a back up, and if he plays any significant time, having him and Iglesias turns the batting order into an NL batting order.  Seriously, if you want a back up infielder, sign John McDonald for a better glove.  Krol is a bullpen lefty.  He's cheap and lets you start Smiley, but he's just a reliever.  Ray has to turn into better than a back end guy for this to work out value-wise

Very, very well said.
