I laughed at the text asking if the Nats could come back from 5-3 in the ninth against Kimbrel. Right before I hopped in the shower got a text about bases loaded, no outs, and laughed again because it would be the perfect way for the Nats to screw up and lose the game.

I wasn't watching, so of course we came back.

BTW - you pinch run for Ramos and not ALR because Ramos is the tieing run.  With the expanded roster, you consider PR also for ALR, but that would mean burning 5 players if the strategy works (ALR, Ramos, Perez, Kobernus,  and Solano; tracy stays in when he PH'd).

It worked out, but it's still a Porsche stuck behind a tractor

LaRoche has 4 stolen bases in 2013, tied for 9th among 1st basemen.

They'll probably get one run on Kimbrel and have the tying run on 3rd, only to lose.

I'm very glad I was wrong.

Disagree. You're two runs down in the bottom of the ninth with the season on the line. You use every resource possible to tie the game. You worry about the 10th inning when you get to the 10th inning, not when you're down by two in your last at-bats.

first run isn't the important run. I agree it is a close call on whether to use a PR once ALR is at 3d because you want him to score on a fly, but not when he is on first, and probably not when he is on 2d.

I left after Desi struck out (on 3 straight, after being up 3-0) to end the 8th, to get back to work from my "long lunch."  I'm actually not disappointed at all to have missed it -- I'll leave every time if it helps us score three off Kimbrel in the bottom of the 9th!!

Comparative dates on which the Nationals notched their 80th win, each season:

2012 - 31st August (131st match of season)
2013 - 17th September (150th match)
2005 - 27th September (158th match)
2011 - 28th September (161st match) - final win of season
---
2007 - finished 73-89
2006 - finished 71-91
2010 - finished 69-93
2008 - finished 59-102
2009 - finished 59-103

---

Still a bit too many of the Lobotomised Legion in the stands...but I'll go to the ballpark for afternoon baseball anytime.

First time in his career that Braves' closer Kimbrel has given up 3 earned runs, per FP Santagelo.
