Power bat off the bench. He served that role pretty well in 2012. I'd prefer he play every day, perhaps even instead of LaRoche, I think he'd be really good if he got a chance to play every day at this level, but I don't think it happens this year unless LaR craters or gets hurt. I don't see a situation where they platoon, at least not to start the year, though.

williams seems more open to moving guys than davey- unless laroche starts out strong, I could easily see him steadily loosing starts to either moore or espinosa

They may end up there, I don't think they start there. They know his history of slow starts, I'm expecting they'll let him work through it, especially if his defense  :couch: doesn't suffer and the rest of the lineup produces like we expect it to. If he hasn't started to heat up by the end of May, then I could see them look to address the issue.

And then hit three homeruns in 2013.

This is why I think the best solution for Moore is to trade him.  There are teams who could use him every day.  The theory "if he plays every day he'll be good" can only be tested by playing him every day, and for how long? Have to give him a month at least don't you.  Nats are not in a position to take that risk. Another team, a  non-contenter, might be.

He wouldn't be the first player to regress the year after they had some success. Those guys rebound often, too. Everytime he's gotten regular playing time at the AAA level and when he did at the big club, too, he's mashed. I have no reason to believe that'd be different if he got regular ABs in DC. I do think the Nats can take that risk if the rest of the lineup returns to form. If they have a couple of injuries and a couple other guys start slow, then they can't.

Davey did a terrible job last season. There isn't a player on the team that didn't suffer to some degree because Davey refused to do his job.

I have been told by great Azathoth through his servant Nyarlathotep that performing certain dark rituals will resurrect Babe Ruth as a shambling husk to play for us. Rosenthal confirms it.

What is Azathoth asking in return? Babe is the GOAT but like I pointed out already to Slate if we have to blow up our core to get him it might be worth considering our options. Maybe we should just go with Trout after all.

FYI, it is possible to be hot and a good baseball player thogh I'd settle for a team full of Jojo the Dog Face boys if it means bringing home a championship.

Jeff Baker inks deal with Marlins, Nationals still interested in Oliver Perez

If we sign Perez then that definitely takes us out of the Burnett sweepstakes.  There'd be no room in the bullpen for another lefty, ie Detwiler.

I could still see a pen with three lefties.  Detwiler and Stammen share duties as the long men.  Perez and Blevins both look to be effective enough against righties and lefties, but my guess is Perez would fit more of a traditional LOOGY role and Blevins more of a one inning or two inning guy to get to the back of the pen.  Clippard and Storen probably set up Soriano or take his job altogether if he continues to be ineffective other than the "save" stat.  This likely means Ohlendorf heads to AAA.  I'd rather have Oliver Perez in the pen then Ohlendorf to be honest.

I've been calling for Detwiler to go to the pen for a while. Makes Mattheus redundant. Detwiler can be a lefty specialist or he can be used to get that ground ball.

Honestly I think Taylor Jordan is a better starting pitcher than Detwiler. You put a guy like Detwiler in the pen and we get a ground ball guy, a lefty, and a guy who can throw two innings if need be.  The only thing that might change my mind is if Detwiler comes in to ST with great control over all three of his pitches. But, as of right now, 2012 was his ceiling and he is a number 5 starter. He's going to be more effective out of the pen where he can get more velocity on his fastball, making his sinker more effective.

Funny thing is I pictured Michael Scott saying this when I was reading it and it sounded perfect.
