Jsut a guess - they aren't spending money or a roster spot to find an alternative set up guy to Clippard, Storen, and Blevins.  When Garcia proves himself healthy or another system product shows he can play that role, then you might see Storen moved.

I don't think it would be Garcia because of the health risks involved.  I also look at the pen and think that outside of Stammen and Clippard, then pen has huge question marks.  If Ohlendorf is the other long man out of the pen, will he be as effective as he was in that role last year?  Is Storen going to bounce back?  Is Cedeno good enough as another lefty?  Will Soriano amass saves but also blow a bunch too?  Is Blevins the lefty that can be counted on?

Even with a streaky track record with walks, I think Rodney is a good addition.  Even if they don't move Storen, it can't hurt to have the added insurance.  I also think that the Nats will convert Karns into a reliever at some point as his change up isn't a good enough third pitch for him as a starter, and he has a pretty big arm that would translate very well into a relief role.

Why not bring in Rodney on a one year deal to set up?  If the Nats are serious on trading Storen (or Soriano if they could), why not bring in Rodney on a low risk deal?  Let Clippard close or duke it out with whoever isn't traded.

Don't use the term "duke" when referring to Nats pitching...

Somebody is gonna give Rodney a closer job and a two year deal. We can't give him that.

Jeff Baker Close To Signing
By Steve Adams [January 28 at 1:07pm CST]
1:07pm: Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post tweets that Baker is close to signing with a team, and the Nationals are still in the mix.

11:39am: The Marlins and Nationals are among the teams showing interest in Jeff Baker, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (on Twitter), who also notes that the Orioles are a possibly interested team.

Despite huge numbers against left-handed pitching -- Baker slashed .314/.407/.667 with 10 homers in 123 plate appearances against southpaws last season -- it's been a relatively quiet offseason for the 32-year-old. The Rangers are known to have interest in re-signing Baker, and the Giants had talks with him a couple months back, though that was shortly before they elected to sign Mike Morse. The Morse signing would seem to indicate that Baker is no longer a consideration for San Francisco.

Baker has just a .647 OPS against right-handed pitching in his career, but he has an .875 OPS against lefties to go along with experience at second base, third base, first base and both outfield corners.

A.J. Burnett Will Pitch In 2014, Test Open Market

By Jeff Todd [January 28 at 3:44pm CST]
A.J. Burnett plans to play this year, reports Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and the hurler may be open to pitching for a team other than the Pirates. This news throws a considerable wrinkle into the free agent pitching market.

Wild speculation.  He's made it clear that he wants to pitch in Pittsburgh, otherwise he's quitting.

This quote is from the Post-Gazette, the only real sport's page in Pittsburgh, and KDKA.   May turn out differently but this is the horse my money's on.

"Roughly three months have passed since Burnett, the free-agent right-hander who spent the past two seasons here, told KDKA-FM that he planned to return to the Pirates or retire."

After keeping the Pirates and the rest of the baseball world in wait for nearly the entirety of the offseason, veteran free agent A.J. Burnett has decided to pitch in 2014, a source close to the situation told the Tribune-Review.

Burnett's decision to return does not mean he will limit himself to pitching for the Pirates, though Burnett indicated that was his preference last season. The 37-year-old Burnett led the National League in groundball rate and strikeout rate last season showing no signs of diminishing skills. The Phillies and Orioles also have reportedly expressed interest in Burnett.

“He's made the decision he is going to play,” said a source, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “I suspect he is going to open himself up to the market.”

Not wild speculation.  Rather a writer willing to put his name on it while protecting a source who requests anonymity.

If he's looking for a 1 year deal, throw him the $15MM this year you plan on committing to someone else (JZ, FisterFury) next year.

"There aren't many who encounter Mike Krzyzewki without coming away impressed. And no, not just because last night he told a tale of his mother growing up near Uniontown by including an 'n at. For real!"

Wow  ...  nice

This is the last year you have bargain payroll in the 3d and 4th slots in the rotation, even if Fister wins his arbitration.  More or less, next year Fister and JZ for 2015 will make what you can have Fister, JZ and Burnett for this year.  This shifts Det into the 6th starter / 2d lefty role.  Your 5-6-7 in the bullpen would be Stammen, Det, and Ohlendorff.  That's terrific.

Plus the Syracuse rotation would be STACKED!

Burnett seems to have a fear of big markets. DC may be too big for his comfort zone.

No, it's just he was throwing to Jorge Posada. He did fine in Toronto, and he pitches half his games on the road.

That said, I think he may want to stay out of the AL East, which would be a knock on Baltimore.

Hmm. Interesting. Puts the Nats and O's at the top of the list I'd guess.

It's a crappy commute to Nationals Park. Not bad to OPACY. Angelos lives in the same town.

Quite frankly, I don't think Rizzo will even try to get Burnett. We have good depth as is and Rizzo has shown that he highly values Det in the past. I think Det will be given every opportunity to keep the fifth spot.
