Would Nats fans prefer Price or Scherzer if the price (no pun) was the same?

Who says we can't have both

Wait, there are people who don't recognize that Scherzer is a one-year-wonder turd?

Why?

I like high K pitchers more?  I honestly don't know, but I feel that Price isn't going to be what he was in Tampa.  It is pure mindfact and nothing else.

Plus he has those crazy eyes.  CRAZY EYES MAN!

The same thing could be said about Scherzer.  I, honestly, wouldn't touch either of these players if I have to weaken the rest of the roster (and trading away Rendon weakens the roster substantially) to get them.

I think we are all falsely assuming Rendon would be in any Scherzer trade. He very well might not be.

I think we're falsely assuming they would even make the trade. Absent some resolution of the MASN deal, do they really have the money to extend an ace (Scherzer may not be one, but you can bet the Boras will insist that he gets paid like one in order to avoid free agency), keep desmond, make an effort to keep Zimmermann, and those other two guys who aren't that far behind will require a bit of money too?

Until I see it, I'm don't believe they're going to spend a penny more than they did last season (which I suspect was already more than they really wanted to spend, but after 2012 they probably felt they had no choice).  The letter the Lerners sent out basically said as much.

agreed, i can't remember who reported it (zuck or kilgore i think) but there was some discussion that they exceeded their "soft" cap this year.  It wouldn't surprise me to see them part with J-Zimm rather than extend him given what they've got in the minors.  If he goes, it's probably for a pre-arb eligible starter with significant upside.

Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I still think they do something big that is a net gain for 2014.

The Learners will end up paying at least the same amount as last year just in arbitration.  JZimm is likely to get 4 Mil more and Desmond is set up for a healthy raise.  Add in bumps in salary for Ramos and Span and that makes up the 13 Million lost from Harden.  I don't think they are topped out, especially after last season.  Maybe they won't be close to the luxury tax, but with 25 more million in TV revenue and a team so close, they can afford someone like Scherzer.

when did the TV situation get resolved? The last numbers that came out were an offer of a $5 million per year tv bump

National deal went from 25 to 52 million a year this year.

People clamoring/expecting the team to go out and make huge waves this offseason are just setting themselves up for disappointment.

Which means that salaries will spike again, get ready for sticker shock.

17+ WAR in the last four seasons. Puts him top 10 amongst all pitchers.

I don't see how's he not. I don't see them wanting anything else. They clearly want to win next season and they will want pieces to do that and/or trade at the deadline. Rendon fills a pretty big need, which is a middle infield bat. Peralta probably won't be back and Iglesias OPS'd .654 with Detroit.

Harper and Strasburg are untouchable. There's no reason for them to trade Scherzer for a top flight pitcher, which eliminates Gio and JZ. Zimmerman would be blocked. Werth is costly and I don't see them wanting him. Austin Jackson is better than Span. None of our relievers (except for maybe Clippard) are worth a whole lot.

Which leaves us with Desmond, Rendon, and Clippard. Clippard alone isn't going to bring in Scherzer unless we pair him with our best prospects (Lucas, Goodwin, ect). That pretty much leaves Desmond and Rendon as the main trade bait, as they are very valuable and fit the Tigers' need.

Exactly.  I don't think it happens but it doesn't happen without Rendon.

ok so we use this gif in place of jags guy for a month and then we go back to jags guy. and yes i believe the tigers will trade a cy young winner for our set up guy. if we dont include rendon then we include giolito, jordan and someone else probably. i would just rather not have anything to do with it
