That's right, I had forgotten about him somehow.  Though it was way too short a sample size he did hit well in a couple of game this year.  The biggest need would be 2b and bullpen.

I think the Tigers bullpen gets addressed in free agency. Brian Wilson and JP Howell. Maybe even a one year deal on Ryan Madson.

Tigers will be looking to trade Schezer for some prospects to re-build the farm.  Not sure the Nats have enough big names unless Rendon is included

Rebuild the farm? Detroit's farm sucked even before the Anibal deal. More like they need to BUILD a farm system.

Perhaps they will but I don't see them letting Max go for a bunch of maybe big leaguers.  The Tigers have not recently really cared about their farm system.  They trade for and sign FA to play immediately.

They had plenty of talent over the past few years. Hence why they were able to trade for Miggy, then Scherzer, then Peralta, then Fister, and most recently Iglesias. They need to re-build it because the last 3-5 years has depleted it.

Whatever they trade him for will include big name prospects or a big name closer. And I don't see anyone parting with a big name closer. Maybe the Angels would part with Ernesto Frieri but the Tigers would want some prospects and the Angels don't have anyone worth him.

Scherzer would be worth Profar and Joey Butler from the Rangers, IMO. Would be an amazing trade for the Tigers. Put Iglesias at short, Profar at second, Castellanos at third, and alternate Miggy and Fielder at 1B/DH. Butler may be MLB ready and could slot in to LF, albeit, not as much power as a LFer should have.

Not likely anymore. They just signed Cuban 2B - Alexander Guerrero for $26 million to start at 2B next year.

Knobler is one of many CBS Sports trolls. I'd like to think he has a source telling him that (hopefully more than one, like a good journalist), but he's likely just trying to drum up interest in some speculation column he's working on.

Joel Sherman had an article on this today for the NY Post.  It looks like other GMs are expecting Max to be on the market, but Dombrowski says no serious talks yet.  That kind of figures because he wrote this less than 24 hours since his last pitch.

In Cabrera, Fielder and Verlander, Detroit already has three contracts of $20 million-plus annually, and Cabrera comes free after the 2015 season. When I asked if the Tigers could afford four mega-contracts, Dombrowski said in theory, yes, but it would probably mean incorporating inexpensive, youngsters in many areas.

Dombrowski also said, “there have been a lot of things I didn’t think we could do financially, and then we could.” That was a nod to Ilitch, the ailing, 84-year-old owner who has made it clear he wants a title in his lifetime.

I think people are over looking Detroit's finances. That had a lower payroll than the Red Sox yet outdraw them by 250K. The topped 3M in attendance for the second year. These folks aren't going away unless management forces them. With new national TV money,their local cable deal and revenue sharing the Tigers should earn about $110M in 2014 that does not include the paying customers which at $30/head (probably too low) is another $90M. They can afford a little more salary.

If Scherzer is a one year rental there is no way I would trade for him unless he signs an extension at the moment of the actual transaction.

Don't the Tigers have an owner on his deathbed willing to spend whatever to win?  At least that's the explanation I remember for the huge Fielder overpay.  So unless that guy is dead now, I don't see them trading Scherzer.

He is still alive and kicking sort of.  Just because you have the money to spend doesn't make it wise to do so all the time balls to the wall.  If they feel they can be competitive without Max in the starting lineup why not trade him and reinvent the team in other positions?

To me, it feels like it could be a trade five years down the road where you think WTF were they thinking but only time can tell and this isn't even a done deal yet.

Somewhat of a different route then some of you are discussing, but apparently there are Jose Bautista rumors of that the Blue Jays are at least thinking of trading him. I know, a 32 year old corner outfielder who only hit .258 last year, but when healthy the guy is one of the best power threats in baseball since 2010. He also played 3rd for Toronto. I really don't know where he'd go, unless you move Harper to CF and Span becomes your 4th outfielder. Guy has a rifle arm, can hit the ball a ton, and his $$$ is not overpriced. I know TO wants 2B so Rendon may be needed to complete a deal, but as far as size able shake ups, this would be one.

Just throwin' it out there for conversation. Don't crucify me!
