New here. I don't think they do anything on the FA market this year for a starter. Garza will get offered much more than he's worth, and the rest of the FA pitchers aren't that great. We have a lot of trading chips this offseason. Tyler Moore really should go somewhere where he can play every day, and Espinosa needs a new start somewhere. We also have a bunch of AAA players who might be able to play on a non-contender -- Perez, Kobernus, Walters, Brown. Even Tanner Roark may be tradeable if it means bringing back an established starter. He may be a case of trading high, like Brad Pea****.
I think they are going to make a big, bold move. Don't know how or where, but I think they'll be willing to eat ALR's contract to get a middle of the order upgrade.
Getting a legit 3 or 4 bat would be a great addition.
I suppose as a TigerFan, you are a litttle bit spoiled for "legit 3 or 4 bats" with Cabrera, not to mention Victor and Prince, but you can have a high scoring offense without the 35+ homer masher if your top and middle of the order are good OBP guys and doubles machines. We have respectable power without the masher. I don't think any of the five 20 HR guys are flukes, especially since they have all done it before. This team does not lack for XBH, either. What it lacks is another grinder who puts together good ABs, has a high OBP, and mid-range power. A .350+ OBP guy with .450 SLG would be an adequate addition. I'm OK with RZ / Harper / Werth / Desmond 2-5. Maybe I'd be happier with a lefty who grinds a bit in front of Desi, or perhaps a guy with even better pop behind desi and in front of Ramos and Rendon.
If you want "that guy", then just pony up the cash for Cano. Span, Zim, Cano, Werth, Harper, Desmond, Ramos and Rendon. Bring in Girardi and re-tool the pen. Done.
Boras certainly thinks highly of canohttp://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/09/robinson-cano-seeking-ten-years-305mm.html
I wouldn't want Cano past 34, maybe 35. if you think you can get 10 more good years out of Rendon, spend your efforts somewhere else.
2 years from now rendon is a better player than Cano, maybe even sooner.
Honestly Cano will be way expensive and this isn't LA. I like Granderson on a 3 year deal playing LF. If the Nats get splashy maybe go for Choo in LF. Harper goes to RF in both situations and Werth to 1B.
