There's no reason for you to even care about this nondescript transaction.

It's November 25th and there hasn't even been a hint of a plausible rumor to heat the stove.

It could be the middle of a division race and he'd still have the same reaction.

.296 /.376 /.407 ! We've found our leadoff hitter!

Oh, wait.  That's what he gave up as a pitcher.

:hang:

Really?  Wow.

MLBTR is saying Beltran still wants to play in the NL...he's not heading back to St. Louis it seems...we should make a play for him.

LF or RF. Put Harp in CF. If he can play first than that'd be ideal.

Didn't think that part through...that would leave us without a leadoff hitter, even though Span really isn't that great of one.

lol.....ummm, who gives a @#$@ what we do with Span?  Sit him on the bench.  Cut him, trade him.  I love the no can do mentality of people on this board.  OMG....we sign a big vereteran bat that can improve 1b or OF, and we're worried about wht to do with Span.

Reds want him.

Yankees want Beltran badly. The benefit of NOT signing Cano is having extra money -- space under the luxury tax -- to use on the six or ten positions the Yankees need to fill.

Beltran did not fare too well in his previous stint in New York.  Don't see him landing there.

Beltran couldn't stay healthy when he was a Met which was mostly his problem.  Plus hitting in Yankee Stadium is much more hitter friendly than Citi Field.

I think Beltran was pretty solid in NY, minus the injuries. He hit .280 with 149 bombs and 559 RBI's in his time there. Not to mention he was 100/116 on stolen base attempts.

Great answer.  Really, explain to me the problem with signing Beltran and then having to worry about Span?  What is the problem?  Who cares?  he can be a 4th Ofr

It creates a really expensive defensive replacement which may not be the best idea for a team with a limited budget

Because he'll be expensive and he'll be 37 years old, and there are always irrational fans that would celebrate the signing and then nag about it a year later when they think they've cracked the code by stumping for the next free agent out of the chute.

Since when do we have a limited freaking budget? Let's be real, Lerner will probably croak within the next 5 years and I'm sure he'll be willing to spend some extra cash if it means winning a championship before it's his time.

Price destination speculation on MLB.com.

Quote
Nationals: Don't rule out these guys making a major move after missing the playoffs this year. The highly regarded Anthony Rendon is the kind of guy that the Rays covet -- a polished hitter with perennial All-Star upside who should fit the budget nicely for at least four seasons. There isn't a natural fit on a team that has Ben Zobrist at second and Evan Longoria at third, but nobody figures out things better than Maddon -- plus, Zobrist's versatility is a huge help.

The costs would be staggering, but how good would the Nationals be if they had Cano at second base and Price working alongside Jordan Zimmermann, Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez in the rotation?

Phil Rogers has us  listed after the Rangers and Dodgers, with the D-backs and NYY as other destinations.

Hypothetically, if Shields plus Davis gets Myers, Odorizzi, and Montgomery, does Rendon, Cole, and say, Souza or Taylor (or, a position prospect that does not have to be added to the 40 man roster) get Price?  There's no Davis piece, which was not a nothing talent-wise, and there is probably comparable salary relief.

I think it would be close.  I think if taylor was replaced with with Goodwin to make it Rendon, Cole, Goodwin, and Souza then it would work.  I know I'd be willing to part with anyone save giolito.

Does the marginal value of Price equal the Davis piece?
