Bulldogs knocked off by Brown, 4-1, in Newark in the Liberty Invitational (non-conference).  I'm guessing that #7 ranking doesn't last long.  Yale tries to split the weekend v. Princeton tonight.

#9 QU invades, takes no prisoners, @Holy Cross, 4-2.  Return match tonight in Hamden at Too Many Names Rink.

#19 Cornell tops UNO, 5-3.

But the biggee of the night was #5 BC traveling to Minnesota and tieing #1, 3-3.  they had a shootout for B1G / Hockey East Challenge, which BC won in the 4th round.  Johnny Gaudreau had his 3d goal of the season.

Other interconference games had Clarkson beating Colorado College, #10 St Cloud with a road victory at Colgate,  #17 Denver pounding Niagara 5-1, #18 Lowell getting back on track at Michigan State, 4-1, #8 Providence beating #3 Miami, #4 Michigan beating #19 BU, #20 northeastern beats St. Lawrence 6-3 at St. L.

#2 Notre Dame beats UMD, 3-2, at UMD.

New Polls are up. Minnesota unanimous #1 after kicking BC's butt saturday, with Notre Dame, Providence, Michigan, and No Dak rounding out the top 5.  Yale drops to #11, BC to #8.  QU back to #7, behind Miami.  9 & 10 are St Cloud and RPI.  Cornell #14, clarkson up to #17 from unranked.

Think I had Providence pegged as a mover early on in this thread.

Big weekend for Clarkson.  I think they scheduled CC a few years back thinking they would be the program that would help them prove their meddle.  However, CC is way down now so Yale and a surprising Brown team will be their first real test.  I will be watching!

One of my all-time fave Caps, Joé Juneau, was an aero eng major at RPI.  I recall hearing one year that he built his own plane during the offseason.

RPI SUCKS!

Seriously though, Houston Fieldhouse is a great place for a game and RPI does have a pretty good hockey tradition.

RPI I think were national champs with Adam Oates and Darren Puppa in 1985, right before Juneau.

There's some good college hockey in Colorado too.  The son of an old friend of my dad's got drafted by the Canucks out of the University of Denver.

Interesting weekend in college hockey.  3 of the top 5 lost Friday.  Notre Dame (2) and Providence (3) split with Vermont and BU #18, while #9 St Cloud had a road sweep @  No Dak (5).  #1 Minnesota was idle.  #4 Michigan swept Michigan Tech.  #6 Miami drubbed Canisius twice.  Quinnipiac (7) and BC (8) had sweeps, BC in a home and home with #19 Northeastern and QU on the road at Colgate and #14 Cornell.  #10 RPI split, losing at Harvard then beating Dartmouth.

UNO had a couple of wins in Denver.

Yale raised its 2013 National championship banner then tied St Lawrence before beating #17 Clarkson.  Yale is bypassing its junior goalie, Connor Wilson, in favor a split between two freshman - Alex Lyons, a highly ranked goalie from Omaha in the  USHL, and Patrick Spano, a goalie from Quebec who played in the British Columbia Hockey League.  It looks like we've come up with a couple of good freshman forwards in Frankie DiChiara and John Hayden. Next week Yale travels to Quinnipiac and Princeton.

I expect Providence and No Dak to take hits in the rankings and slip to #8 and #9.  Minnesota stays put, Michigan moves up to #2, BC #3, Miami #4, QU, St Cloud, Notre Dame, Providence, No Dak.  RPI will take a hit, and I'm guessing someone will jump Yale for #10.

Got NoDak coming in next week with Michigan the weekend after that.  I'll be going to the first of that Michigan series.

Top 10 going into the weekend, per USCHO:
Minn, Mich, St Cloud (big mover from 9 last week), Notre Dame, Quinnipiac,
Providence (down from 3), Miami, BC, Yale, RPI.

Surprised BC did not move up more after sweeping Northeastern.

#7 Miami is at #3 St Cloud for two this weekend.  #1 Minnesota is at #4 Notre Dame for two.  #9 Yale at #5 QU Saturday night for the "Heroes Hat" and round one of the War on Whitney.

... And the last two unbeatens, #1 Minn and #3 St Cloud, pickup their first losses last night, 4-1 at Notre Dame and 2-0 to #7 Miami.  #5 QU stretches its winning streak to 9, beating Brown, setting up tonight's rematch of the ECAC consolation game for bragging rights on Whitney Ave.

#15 Cornell and #10 RPI tie 3-3, #8 BC beats #17 BU 5-1 to cement its top spot on the B line.  Bowling Green knocked off #18 Minnesota State on the road, 4-3. #2 Michigan was idle as was #11 No Dak, #12 UMa-Lowell, #13 Wisconsin, and #20 UMn-Duluth.  rest of the top 20 won.

It will be interesting to see who starts in goal for Yale tonight.  Spano started last night, stopping 23 of 25 shots in a 5-2 win at Princeton.  They had been starting Lyon on Fridays and Spano on Saturdays.  If Lyon starts tonight, he may be the one that is lined up against tougher opponents.  On the other hand, what may be more likely is that Allain has decided Spano is #1 for now.  Both are well regarded freshman.  Game is on QU's youtube channel, Fox College Sports (Pacific) [weird], and WCCT TV, which I think is a public station.  I'm going to see if CCSP can pull it in.

QU 1 - Yale 0, after one period.  Quinnipiac goal by Sam Anas from Potomac with < 1 minute left in the period.  Anas has 8 goals this year.   Goes back to what I've been saying - there's enough talent in the mid-Atlantic to have a D1 program.

After 2, Yale 3 - QU 2.  QU dominates first 30 minutes, get 2d goal on a power play (turnover on a clearance, feed low to the corner, and Samuels-Thomas makes a nice power move and stuff it by Lyon).  QU draws a penalty right after that, and Yale scores 3 goals in 3+ miinutes. First on the power play (Obuchowski blast from the point), followed up by a goal on a scramble by a big freshman forward (DiChiara) and another rebound by Doherty off a shot by Young into the goalie's body.  Looks like we have 3 good freshman forwards (Hayden, DiChiara, and Doherty).  Lyon in net.

RPI up on Colgate 3-1, Clarkson and Harvard tied 1-1

3-3 after regulation.  QU ties it with 5 minutes left on a 4 on 4.  St Denis rush behind the net, yale defensemen looking at him from in front, Peca moves into the slot, and St Denis hits him with a pass against the grain.  QU has 48 shots tonight so far.  first half of the game, they probably outshot yale by 20.

and it's 3-3 after overtime.  Lyon looked good, as did the QU goalie.  Lyon a small guy, butterfly style but very good with elevated shots.

Biggest result last night was UNO's come from behind in the 3d period win over #2 Michigan, 3-2, at home.  Also, #7 BC tied UMass 2-2 and #10 RPI lost to Union, 4-3.  Rest of the top 10 that played won.  Lots of losses for teams #11-20

9 of the 12 ECAC teams are getting top 20 votes and six are in the top 20.  An all ECAC National Championship Game last year really went a long way to giving the league credibility.

ECAC is deep and even but not elite at the top like HE and the Big 10.  Except for QU, I'm not sure there are great ECAC candidates for a #1 seed.  Maybe Yale on rep and off last year, and Clarkson is a nice surprise.  I suspect the road to the championship is known as Whitney Avenue.  Quinnipiac looks like it can be an elite team. I'd love to see them play Minnesota.  Yale's probably a notch below right now, but if Lyon improves over the year, they can make another deep run.

#2 Michigan salvages a split with UNO, 4-3.

Saturday's nominee for most interesting result is Colgate's defeat of #11 Clarkson, 4-3, in the North Country.   That's 2 wins over ranked teams on the road over the weekend for Colgate.  Union topped #10 RPI, 4-1, so with 2 losses at home, you can expect RPI to tumble in the next rankings.  #19 Cornell topped #17 St. Lawrence, so St. L will probably drop, too.

Merrimack tied #4 Notre Dame, 2-2, at home, and #5 Providence swept Vermont, 3-2 and 3-0.  UNH took two over #18 Northeastern and is on a 5 game win streak after starting 1-5-1.

#20 UM Duluth split with #13 No Dak in the NCHC, while in the WCHA, #14 Ferris State went 1-0-1 with Bowling Green and #15 Lake Superior State split at Michigan Tech.

Another nominee for most interesting result is #12 Wisconsin topping #8 Miami, 3-2, splitting the weekend at Miami.  #1 will stay the same as they topped Minnesota State twice.  #3 St Cloud acted like a ranked football team and blew out Alabama-Huntsville 10-0 Friday, but Saturday just squeaked by 4-3.  #9 Yale, #16 Lowell both won their only games this weekend.

Looking at these results, I'm going to guess that the top 5 will be Minnesota, St Cloud, Providence, Michigan, QU, followed by Notre Dame, BC, Yale, Miami, and Wisconsin.
