Football isn't baseball :smh:

And yes, managers are low impact, but Davey still won a championship. he isn't holding the team back.

Not that hard to get my point; Davey is a championship caliber manager, but at the end of the day managers are low impact. Unless it's Manny Acta, you're ok at that spot.

Davey WAS a championship caliber manager. 20+ years ago. Now he's not. Otherwise, we'd have a freaking championship, now wouldn't we?

Oh, so only the last manager to win it considered championship caliber? And just as I was starting to think guys like Girardi and Francona are that caliber of managers.

No, but when it's been 20 years and there are several painful examples of why you're not a championship level manager, then you aren't one. Frankly, I think Davey is quite overrated as a manager. If he doesn't have a stupendous year in 1986, he is basically a good manager who could never win the important games.

Davey was successful everywhere he managed. I don't like his Earl-weaver-wait-for-the-big-inning approach to offense. I like bunts, steals, hit&run, squeeze bunts. Davey knew what he was doing.

Anyone listen to Howard Stern this morning?  He had Lenny Dykstra.  Stern asked him "did Davey Johnson hate you?"  Response:  No, I don't think he hated me it's just that he was always so hungover in the morning that I was never able to talk to him".

Old man Davey Johnson was nursing a hangover into work? Forreal? I guess it's a requirement for the job.

I always wondered why Davy stopped being Nats manager.  He seemed so good at it that there didn't seem to be a good reason.

Uh, it looked to me that by the All Star Break he was physically and mentally exhausted by the third inning of an east coast game. The west coast after game interviews sounded like a guy who got five vicodin crushed up and served to him in the applesauce he had for dinner.  He was a completely different guy in morning radio interviews vs end of the day.

he was out because this team regressed in 2013.  Simple as that.

Interesting parallel, Davey 2012/2013 and Matt 2014/2015.  Both went from Manager of the Year to terrible manager/out the door.

Davey was terrific.....until the dreaded Game 5. Guy just went full senile then and never really recovered.

Still love him though. He was as big a part of that 2012 season as anyone.
