Rick Ankiel may try pitching again.

In other news, I'm going to try out for the Chippendales 2013 South American tour.  Already got my back waxing scheduled.

3)   Extend Ian Desmond (6 years, 45 million)
By July, this deal will look like an absolute steal for the Nationals. He’s a stud, lock him up!

No.  One swallow doesn't make a summer and he's under team control until 2016.  Why pay extra when we're going to get the best years for cheap.  We've already got two guys getting paid more than they're werth, let's not go overboard.

4)   Extend Jordan Zimmermann (5 years, 35 million)
No brainer.

Yes, should have been done two years ago.

It just dawned on me that Stras is going to pitch a complete season.  Damn that is awesome.

Still trying to figure out why we're looking for a lead off guy or CF.  We've got a pretty good thing going in both of those spots that should last at least another year or two before we need to switch things up there.  We've got bigger issues than either of those two spots.

Just to weigh in here, I go with Hondo on ALR and Jackson.  I make qualifying offers because I do not think they will take them, although Jackson might.  I continue to negotiate with ALR, but I think we lose him to a team willing to go 3 years and $30MM.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I do try to lock up Ian for a couple years beyond his FA.  5 years with an option.  $33MM over 5 years plus two options at $13MM with a $3MM buyout of two and a $1MM buyout of one.  Good money if you can make it, and really pricing him as a ~2 WAR player to insulate us from the drop off.

Sign JZ.  Time to pay up.

Pursue Affeldt and Haren.

I'd seriously think about seeing if we could trade for Kubel if we do not retain ALR.  I don't think the price will be too high, he's signed pretty cheap for one year with an option.  I think that is a cheaper way to pay for ALR's offense, and defensively, I don't think he is too much of a downgrade from Morse.  Morse can cover 1st, and Moore can back up both.

I'm wondering if, on the ALR end, it was more a matter of protocol to decline the option with the Kilgore discussion the past week or so that there was a framework in place for a deal.  Maybe that's not the case, IDK.  Just thinking while I type a bit...

That would make him a hell of a utility guy.  I'd give him a spring training invite and a minor league contract to see if he's still got it on the mound.

Speaking of which, with the discussion of Cordero making a comeback, any chance Rizzo gives him a minor league deal and he can give it a shot in the Nats organization?

I like this. It would be a classy thing to do. Other players take note of stuff like this.

None.  Might as well ask if Da Meathook is looking for another shot.

Didn't he lose a lot of weight?  Dude was living like Henry VIII despite having T2DM.  Either way, he's almost 40.

Morosi thinks that LaRoche and Jackson land in Boston and the Nats go for B.J. Upton.

Boss gets extra  for that the MoB youtube.  It's been at least a week since I listened to it.

When I saw MoB eight years ago, Roger wore these special headphones to drown out the stage noise and STILL had to take an hour break to finish the set.  Super cool dudes though, Clint is a real bad ass.

Back to offseason moves.

I mentioned Kubel as a possible cheap lefty bat we could bring in via trade if we don't sign ALR.  Another name that could be acquired for prospects would be Shin-Soo Choo. Posted more of my thinking here:

Allows you to drop Harper down to #5 in the order.   3.97 P/PA for a career and 4.09 last year.  Hit him #2.

Werth
Choo
RZ
Morse
Harper
Desi
Espinosa / Lombo
Suzuki/ Ramos

Afterthought - I might still want Choo in left if we kept ALR.

Werth / Choo / RZ / ALR / Desi / Harper / 2d / C.

The problem with Choo is that he's only good at leadoff or the two hole and, in either situation, bumps Bryce down in the order, which would be bad for his development.  If Choo had more power I'd be all about him but he's a decent doubles hitter that's got some wheels that doesn't really fill a need if AdaMVP is gone.

Well, I want Choo to hit #2, and I think Bryce can move up to #4 from #5 or #6 by the end of the year.

Eventually, all things work out, Goodwin slides into #1 or #2 when Choo leaves.

I don't know, I'd prefer keeping Bryce in the two hole so he can build a good catalog of pitchers thanks to having Jayson "Work dat count" Werth ahead of him and Magnum ZI behind him.  That's preferable, to me, then having him bat fifth or sixth where there's no one behind him except for the strikeout brigade.
