I'd say he's extremely unlucky, not worn down.

Coming into today, Clippard was having his best "control what you can control" month in 2012.

September - 2.36 xFIP, 12.71 K/9, 1.59 BB/9, 8 K/BB

more homers than usual.  your have to list all the stats.

You're a freaking idiot.

99% of baseball isn't half the pitcher Kimbrel is. That's why he's in the running for Cy Young.
That gives them a huge edge down the stretch and in the postseason. Same with the rest of the teams. Huge weakness for the Nats.

How do you miss that call?  That's what the homeplate umpire is supposed to be looking for.

Inexcusable. This crap is impacting the playoff race. Rizzo has to make a stink about this crap

they shouldnt have left the bases loaded

They shouldn't have waited till the 8th inning to score.

Still, they tied it and our "closer" gagged it away on an 0-2 fastball.

He's a flyball pitcher.. who's having his second best month of GB/FB ratio of the season in September. It just happens that the balls that have got in the air in September have occasionally (twice) found the seats. Once again, unlucky.

And more HR's than usual? Sure. But maybe that's because he's only given up a total of 6 all year! Four in July and two in September. He's a flyball pitcher.. he SHOULD give up HR's. It's been a minor miracle he hasn't given up more. It's not from fatigue. It's just water finding it's level in the HR/FB department.

I doubt you'll ever learn this in life... cause you seems like a person devoid of reason/sanity/humility... but sometimes, just sometimes... you're allowed to give others credit. Matt Kemp may just be a good player. It may not just be about someone failing and being a "donk".

Run #6 for the Dodgers.  Zim tagged the runner for the third out before the other runner crossed the plate.  Wasn't really that difficult a call.
Yeah, I was a bit confused looking at the scoring plays since Gonzalez was the third out. Too bad we had to lose, that was an 8th inning to remember.

That's assuming they get to Kimbrell.  From what I can tell, Nats have a better pen, top to bottom than the Braves.  That doesn't seem like a huge weakness to me.

I've said it before:  Alan Porter is a HORRIBLE umpire.  He's made some bad calls before, but this takes the cake.  http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=24900029&topic_id=8877508&c_id=was - the last couple seconds of the clip clearly shows that the runner was nowhere near the plate.  Porter never even looked at the runner and just made a guess when Mattingly came out.

Porter does seem to make his fair share of errors.

He needs to be fired.  Seriously.  He sucks at his job.

Yep.  The umpires are invincible and can't be forced to be held accountable, so the Nats just need to put this one behind them and win tomorrow.

From Zuckerman:

Quote
Ump Alan Porter declined to comment to a pool reporter about the blown call at the plate in 4th.

And for that, he should be fired, immediately.  I expect to not see him on the field tomorrow.

Doesn't surprise me.  If I freaked up like he did, I'd probably decline comment too.  But I'd probably also get fired, whereas he'll be back on the field tomorrow.

You might be able to buy some runs but you cannot buy a winner. Dodgers got lucky with some help from blue.

They get to Kimbrel more often than not. O'Flaherty, their setup man, is also invincible.

The Braves have a stronger pen, no question about it. Our pen peaked back in May/June and hasn't been the same since.

It looked like Porter initially was not going to call Kemp safe.  he does not point to the plate, he just tosses the ball back to the mound.  When Mattingly comes out, the umps confer, then Porter goes over to talk to Davey.  Davey says it was Porter's call, and Porter says he saw it, but I'm thinking he was convinced by the other umps in the conversation and is just saying that because it should be his call.  I think he yielded.  after talking to Davey, he points to the plate to signal the run scored.

It's still incompetence.  If I'm right, he should not have yielded to the other umps when it was clearly his call.  If I'm wrong, and it really was what he saw, then his mind can't process reality quick enough to be an ump.

I now inform Alan Porter that he is too far from reality.

THIS DAY WITH THE '05 OVERACHIEVERS: Travel day, following a 1-2 series at San Diego and preparing for a home series with Barry Bonds and the Giants...record 77-73.

---

The 90th win in Game 1 last night pulls us even with one of Walter Johnson's relatively early teams:

99 - 1933 [pennant winner]
96 - 1925 [pennant winner]
94 - 1930
93 - 1932
92 - 1924 [World Series winner], 1931
91 - 1912
90 - 1913, 2012
87 - 1945
86 - 1969

---

Looks like whatever post-season we do manage to get will be a handicap match against not just our actual opponent but against incompetent/biased umpires....

---

Announced attendance 26,931 (sounds a bit low from what I saw in Game 2), our second-best ever home turn-out for the Dodgers (best was Strasburg's return 6th September of last year in front of 29,092).

It seems odd that we've never broken 30k at Nats Park for a Dodgers visit...one wonders if the SoCal expats here aren't as supportive as the Bay Area expats are for the Giants, or if the Angels have cut into Dodgers support in the LA area...but another thing might be that all of our Nats Park series against the Dodgers have been weeknight series (only weekend home series was in 2006 at RFK) and weather has been a factor both this year and last (and possibly earlier Nats-Dodgers series too).
