If NY is blocking the Feds from accessing their motor vehicle databases how can they verify who people are to give them trusted traveler status?
I guess I’m trying to think this through. If I applied for this what would checking the DMV tell anyone? If I have points from speeding does that mean I can’t fly. Wouldn’t checking for criminal offenses be a priority.

I’m not positive but I don’t recall on federal security checks that they look at the DMV data bases.

Real New Yorkers don’t drive anyway.

DHS wants it all.

Because you can easily apply without using a drivers license

I believe illegals get drivers licenses all the time in NY, CA and other places. Also assuming you hav to show more than one form of ID for this program?

I’m more upset that my current VA drivers license won’t work at airports after October. Pain in the butt to carry a passport.  And looks like you have to visit the DMV to get the real VA license.

the randomness of the process astounds me, they didn't think a deed was proof of residency, but thankfully we had a piece of old junk mail in the car which was perfectly acceptable

The Global Entry card can be used as a REAL ID.

I always carry my passport when traveling, even within the US. If my wallet and driver’s license are ever stolen, I’ll have the passport as a backup ID so I can board the plane to get back home. I just tuck it in my suitcase. Guess I can use my GE card as a backup as well.

Not sure about VA, but MD has RealID appointments available that can be booked online. You’re guaranteed to be seen within 15 minutes of your appointment time. It goes quickly. We were in and out within 20 minutes.

You can technically board a plane without an id. it just is a pain in the ass and takes forever and you are liable to miss your plane if you are running behind schedule. Also you get searched extensively.

One of the beauties of CLEAR. Since it's biometric it doesn't require ID. Unfortunantely, it's expensive.

Also, it's named after a Scientology achievement level.

That's what I thought as my wife applied for TSA Precheck. In many airports, it won't even speed up the process much.

Precheck is through TSA and gets you a supposedly faster line, however, because it's government, they can't charge too much so a bunch of people sign up and the line can still be long. Clear is private and costs enough to keep demand low- they literally escort you to the front of the line.

I fly about 1-2x per month and only have pre-check.  Lines are usually shorter and quicker than general security.  I've never seen the need for Clear.

I have Global Entry (you would too if you've ever seen the ghastly passport-control queues at Dulles international arrivals at mid-afternoon) which also includes TSA Pre-Check. One thing that has to be borne in mind is that TSA Pre-Check changes constantly, often several times during the course of a day - for example, spring of last year I took two trips to Europe; on the first of these trips they did little more than wave me through, but on the second trip they gave me a quite thorough examination. And coming back from Paris in April 2018 I had to come back via JFK since my original flight back to Dulles was cancelled due to a strike - and at the Delta terminal where I would make my connection they shut down TSA Pre-Check altogether and everyone except Sky Priority passengers had to go through the regular security queue. (I have read of this happening at the international terminals of other airports, notably Chicago O'Hare.) On the whole, though, it is a quicker security procedure.

A few airports in Europe offer similar services: London Heathrow has 'Fast Track' security available to anyone flying business or first class (no membership or other extra charges). I have gone through this twice and in my opinion it's overrated - in both cases I got the full-scale inspection that took just as long as regular security; the only advantage was that the original queue wasn't as long.

In the meantime, for your entertainment, the latest episode of TSA Agents Behaving Badly: https://thehill.com/homenews/news/482112-tsa-agent-arrested-after-allegedly-tricking-woman-into-showing-breasts

Another low-cost carrier on its last legs: Norwegian Air Shuttle (https://finance.yahoo.com/news/norwegian-air-cancel-85-flights-131950566.html). This is being blamed on the coronavirus crisis, but their fiscal problems actually antedate this.
