Sounds like a good expo.

Did he mention anything about the current attitude towards Americans in Europe? In February we’re headed out for a 3-week Mediterranean cruise on Windstar (small 300 passenger ship), hitting Croatia, Italy, Spain, and Gibraltar. Not to get into politics, but I’m a bit concerned about how Europeans will receive us.

Wouldn't be too worried. There may be some reaction, but only from people who are anti-American anyway. A difference has to be made between attitudes towards the President / Government and towards ordinary Americans (generally completely different...). When some Europeans say 'I don't like America' they actually mean 'I don't like the President'...

He did spend a bit of time addressing current anxieties related to European travel and did specifically mention fear that Europeans would be anti-American. Without crossing too far into politics, he said that unless you come over with an attitude, you will be fine. Most Europeans just can't understand what's happening in the US. He also said not to worry about visas as they are still very easy to obtain.

He did say that there is a fair amount of resentment of cruise travelers (not so for those who stay locally) because the cruise ships bring thousands of visitors at one time that often overwhelm the ports, and cruise passengers don't stay overnight and so they don't contribute as much to the economy as those who stay 1-2 nights (or more) who spend more money and usually take more time to learn about the culture. So that may be something to be aware of, though being on a smaller cruise hopefully means you won't be part of the horde.

More than anything, his big push is to get away from the tourist areas to meet the locals and gain an understanding and appreciation of local culture, that's more difficult to do when on a cruise with limited time in port.

The greatest animosity towards cruises is at Venice - local politicians have tried to ban cruise ships, and there have been demonstrations against cruises by the locals.

Definitely valid points about cruise ships overwhelming ports, especially the ones carrying thousands of passengers. Even as a cruise ship passenger but on a small cruise ship, I hate to see those big behemoths berthed at the same port, because I know what chaos they inflict.

And also valid that cruise ship passengers do not contribute as much to the local economy as visitors who stay at hotels. So I get the resentment about cruise ships.

That’s a big reason why we’re traveling in the dead of winter - as offseason as you can get. There aren’t as many hordes of tourists mobbing everything, so hopefully things will be a bit more relaxed.

I was just worried about any additional resentment given the times. I guess I’ll find out.

Cleaned up a few posts for political comments. Fair to comment on Euros attitudes towards Americans vs the government. Let's keep who you root for or showing who you root for out of it.

Charleston SC got fed up with the traffic etc and no longer hosts Carnival tours (effective 2024), nor do visiting ships embark or disembark passengers.

I spent last week skiing in Austria, which coincided with a certain unsightly event in nearby Davos.  The resentment is real, but it's not personal for the most part, unless one plays the stereotype and acts like an ass.  More worth worrying about is the free fall of the USD vs the Euro.
I was just worried about any additional resentment given the times. I guess I’ll find out.
