Good thing we didn’t buy that summer place in Winnipeg.

Airlines curtailing or outright eliminating alcohol on flights. Yet one more reason I won’t be flying anytime soon.

And it's not just the airlines but the airports - Dulles, for one, is dry (and the airline clubs - I have BA club privileges - are all closed, except possibly for one or two of the United clubs). London Heathrow is also dry - in fact the only places on that whole airport you can get anything to eat or drink at all are the Boots and WHSmith concessions.

Updating: The Firkin and Fox has re-opened in the 'A' concourse at Dulles. Heathrow is still dry but at least the Caffe Nero and Pret a Manger concessions have re-opened.

Australia unlikely to re-open to international tourists till next year (per that country's trade minister): https://www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/1297096/holidays-2020-Australia-bans-tourists-next-year-quarantine-rules-students

If you're going to London this year don't count on seeing any West End shows - several including Hamilton and Phantom of the Opera are closed and not coming back till 2021: https://www.standard.co.uk/go/london/theatre/hamilton-les-miserables-closed-west-end-2021-a4471731.html

I am now unexpectedly headed to Chicago in 3 weeks because my grandmother is not doing well. Gonna drive because it still seems safer. Ohio is in the middle of that route: gonna check out Canton on the way there and Zanesville on the way back.

if you have a chance to pass through Dayton, and on the off-chance the Wright-Patterson AF museum is open, and the even more off-chance you haven't been there already, check it out.

update - it opens on July 1 - https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil

Pro Football Hall of Fame is worth it if open.

I did the AF Museum on Veterans Day 2014 and it was fantastic. Every bit the equal of the Udvar-Hazy Center. This time, I will just make a quick stop in Dayton for Dayton-style pizza.

Big draw for me in Canton is the tomb of President McKinley.

We visited the USAF Museum around 2010 or so, before they built the AF1 wing.  Easily a two day visit to see everything there.

Yeah, I had to rush through parts of the USAF museum but it was better than seeing nothing at all. I believe that is one of two places in the world where you can see a nuclear missile train (my favorite piece of wacky Cold War technology) and I totally missed that, for which I've been kicking myself for years.

That’s ok. I didn’t want to go to Europe this year anyway.

Apparently a decision hasn't yet been finalised but it's not looking good for the US, especially with the recent corona surge: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8452773/EU-ban-American-travelers-entering-Europe-COVID-19.html

And it's not just the EU - the US is going to have to ease up a bit at their end too (with passengers returning from abroad).

there's a certain irony to the EU barring American travelers for having covid while we (attempt to) take a victory lap based on early closures

It makes more sense if you think of the US as basically a banana republic. Which it is.

I mean, I'm a big rah-rah flag flying American patriot, and even I wouldn't allow Americans to enter right now either. Guess I should read my travel insurance policy for that September trip to Europe...

If the homepage of TravelGuard (https://www.travelguard.com/) is typical, it's going to be difficult (at best) to recoup losses from trip cancellation or interruption due to COVID-19.

I know the feeling though - I've got four European bookings between September and December.

just hope you're still in charge back territory - failure to supply a service is usually grounds per merchant agreements (at least with amex)

Well worst case scenario I have "cancel for any reason" coverage where I get 50% back. I booked all my flights and hotels with points (chase ultimate rewards points for my flights, hilton points for my hotels) and perhaps I can get those back.

I have a Plan B involving a domestic roadtrip, but now states are putting quarantines in place on each other - see what New York just did this morning.
