Ignore Feature
« Topic Start: May 28, 2012, 09:13:12 PM »
This is a relatively minor issue, but if I remember correctly, it used to be when you ignored a user, you would never see anything at all when they posted.  Now, you'll see the post, but the text is replaced by the language "You are ignoring this user. Show me the post."  Also, if anyone quotes an ignored poster, the entire text of the ignored post will show up in that post.  There's one poster in particular that I would rather never see posts from again so it would be nice if there was someway to completely avoid seeing ignored users and their posts at all.  I don't know if anything can be done about this, and again, it's not a huge deal either way.  Thanks!

You're right... it used to be where you wouldn't see anything at all... but when we switched to an updated board... it was replaced with "You are ignoring this user. Show me the post."

Re: the quote issue, most forum software has the same problem.

Honestly, it makes the ignore feature pretty worthless. Crappy posts get quoted more than good posts.

Also, there is no such thing as "ignore" on the mobile version. You see all posts, always.

Not complaining dino man... Just letting others know.

Crappy posts get quoted more than good posts.

To clarify, I mean that people seem more inclined to quote posts they disagree with to refute them than to quote a post they agree with. So  a particularly unpopular post will get quoted more times than a popular one.

I'm concerned because before when you quoted somebody, you saw nothing. Now you see a message than an ignored user posted. Also, you can see an ignored person's posts if they are quoted. There's one guy whose posts I never want to see again. It's not a big deal but if you could take care of it that would be great!

Kevrock hits the nail on the head RE: quoting posts.  Linty is also correct about the mobile verison.  As for the "you are ignoring this user" bit, that was there in the old version too, but I dove into the code and cobbled together an ugly little hack to remove the posts altogether.  A sharp eye would notice that the background of posts before and after an ignored post would be the same color (instead of alternating).  I never got around to figuring that out.

Short version - these are all valid complaints that I share.  I can't promise any of them will be resolved, but I check for mods on the SMF site periodically, and I may look into updating the ugly hack.

You mean like this ?

I'd like to see something saying "You are being ignored by this user".

I ignore myself.  I don't find anything new in those posts that I have not already thought of.

I have Danny Espinosa on Ignore.  He can continue to strike out in the minor leagues, until the end of the season.

Remove them and re-add them perhaps?  Could you PM me more details?

I kinda like the format it is in now, because a lot of times when using my phone to browse around on here, I accidentally ignore someone.

This let's me know I fat fingered the screen and I can fix it.

I miss the old ignore where it erased the user from existence. From conversations with a lot of members, one in particular would practically be wiped away from the board, smarm and all.

I don't use the ignore option any longer.   Let it all in and "ignore" on a per message (occasional user) basis.

I can't wait for this feature in the next version of the forum software:

Is this the feature I've been asking for for about a decade now?

As I read it the threads will still show up in if you click into the clubhouse, loft, etc., but they won't show up in "recent unread" (aka what happens when you click the DC logo)
