Both sides of this entire thing are built on ifs.

We could all die tomorrow.

I'm actually going to give up on this because I don't want to be the crazy guy that wants to give away a year of Harper's prime.  All I'm trying to do is make the point that the decision could actually be more complicated than it seems.

Explain why it would be more complicated than it seems other than saying "he's ready".

Ready to do what, exactly?

A debate everyone would look back on and shrug if he made the team and ended up signing an extension before free agency.

Actually, we'd still use it as an example of Rizzo being a maroon.

What has this team done, offensively, to indicate they're playoff caliber?
                This.......Absolutely this.

I believe Harper will start the season in Syracuse.  He needs more seasoning in the minors before he gets called up to the Nats.  I'd also like to see some of his cockiness gone.  Broadway Joe he's not.

This is worse than anything I've said in this thread.  For the record: if Harper starts with the team, it works out perfectly, and ultimately he signs an extension...Rizzo is a maroon.  Beautiful.

Harper isn't going to re-sign.

Out of the 100's of clients Boras has... how many can you think of that have re-signed with the team that drafted them? I can only think of one.

That's all well and good, I'm just talking about the idea that the scenario in which he does re-sign wouldn't be good enough for some reason.

By the way, Andruw Jones?

so the team should act based on an ideal scenario, that all evidence suggests won't happen?

I never said that.  I just said that IF that did happen, this debate wouldn't be that big a deal in the end.  And somebody else said Rizzo would be dumb if everything worked out perfectly.

Jered Weaver.

Also, while he was not drafted by the Red Sox, Varitek played his whole major league career there and re-signed twice under Boras's representation.

So Weaver, Jones and kind of Varitek- he had more players than that hit free agency this year alon

In the end it comes down to what the player wants.  Plus there's so many factors to play out between now and his free agency it's impossible to make anything other than a total guess about it.

Exactly.

So you exercise what you can control.

And the Nats can have Harper for an entire extra year by keeping him in the minors for 21 days.

I actually get the crux of the issue, and I know that it's a huge deal.  But I'm also rooting for him to make the team and considering reasons they might actually think about it.  It's an extreme minority opinion so I'm being super defensive about it, but it's not at all like I think it's the only way.

From the article:
Quote
Being a major league baseball fan, and New York Yankees fan, since the 1970s when I was a kid, I've learned over the years to disregard the talk regarding young prospects unless those prospects back up the talk with stats.

To be fair, if I had spent my entire life as a fan of a franchise that consistently and absurdly overhyped their own prospects to almost god-like proportions (although the NYC media is mostly at fault here), I'd be a little skeptical of prospect hype too. As for his over-reliance on minor league statistics to measure a player's potential (let alone a single season worth of stats)... I don't know what to tell you. He probably saw Moneyball and discovered his first issue of Baseball America on the same day.

"He can certainly keep developing and become a major league baseball superstar. But based upon the stats that Bryce Harper put up in the minor leagues in 2011, he is not going to be a superstar in the major leagues."

(1) he CAN become a major league baseball superstar.
(2) he is NOT GOING TO be a superstar in the major leagues.

This is just plain sloppy writing and poisons the rest of the piece.

He's probably pretty young.
