I'd rather 2.5 over 100 than 2.5 over 150 since the extra 50 games will be played by someone who presumably will contribute more than 0
I think the presumption is 0 WAR from a replacement player, by definition. In real life, it depends on your bench. I don't recall what the Cora / Hairston combo gave us filling in for RZ, but IIRC they were around 0 or maybe slightly positive.
2.5 WAR is still above average. It goes back to a peeve of mine when people are quick with the "werthless" stuff. On the field, Werth had an OK, maybe an above average year. It was below expectations, it was below his AAV, it may tie up the team in terms of budget, and it may be a disaster in the tail end of the contract. All in all, we may have been bettter without the move. But don't think the guy can't play, isn't an upgrade over the crud we were throwing out in the OF for years (J-Max, Willy Taveras, Superwillie, Bernie - need I remind anyone?). He's not a liability in the field or in the batting order. More or less, shout LAI or Fire Rizzo, but don't be a bunch of idiots and saying he's unfit to be on a baseball team and a non-contributor.
