Every relevant stat would seem to disagree, but you know it's whatever...

the funny thing is, some are arguing about WAR, and Werth and RZ had the same WAR last year.

War isn't averaged out based on games played is it?  Because if not, Zimmm had the same WAR with only 2/3rds the games.

and it took Zimmerman 50 less games than the anchor to do it. I'd rather 2.5 over 100 than 2.5 over 150 since the extra 50 games will be played by someone who presumably will contribute more than 0

It is not, it's cumulative, so your second statement is correct. With that said it's worth noting it's relatively easier to accumulate WAR as a 3B because of the positional adjustment. But yeah, Werth didn't do so hot last year, something most of us already knew.

The positional adjustment is made simply because it's so much harder to play certain positions.  Zimm is probably the 3rd or 4th best 3rd baseman in the game, and it's right to compare his production directly to other 3rd basemen to determine how much he's worth to our team.

Nats, Zimmerman in talks for extension
By Bill Ladson / MLB.com | 01/18/12 7:10 PM EST

WASHINGTON -- Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman made it clear recently that he wants to stay with Nationals for the rest of his career. Zimmerman's current contract has two years and $26 million remaining.

But, according to two baseball sources, the Nationals and agent Brodie Van Wagenen were discussing an extension for Zimmerman. This news comes on the heels of Washington's attempt to acquire free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder. It's not known how the discussions went between Zimmerman and the Nationals.

Neither Zimmerman, Van Wagenen nor general manager Mike Rizzo was available for comment on contract talks. However, back in December, Zimmerman indicated that he wants to be with the Nationals when they start reaching the postseason.

Assuming we sign Fielder, the pressure will be on to trade Zimmm, to the point that if we can't find a trade partner by early spring training there is a good chance he gets cut.

Longoria and Beltre I had in mind, though Zimmerman if healthy is damn near a clone of Longoria.

3rd or 4th best reflects the health discount.  Note BP had him 11th last year in large part due to that reality.

I think the presumption is 0 WAR from a replacement player, by definition.  In real life, it depends on your bench.  I don't recall what the Cora / Hairston combo gave us filling in for RZ, but IIRC they were around 0 or maybe slightly positive.

2.5 WAR is still above average.  It goes back to a peeve of mine when people are quick with the "werthless" stuff.  On the field, Werth had an OK, maybe an above average year.  It was below expectations, it was below his AAV, it may tie up the team in terms of budget, and it may be a disaster in the tail end of the contract.   All in all, we may have been bettter without the move.  But don't think the guy can't play, isn't an upgrade over the crud we were throwing out in the OF for years (J-Max, Willy Taveras, Superwillie, Bernie - need I remind anyone?).  He's not a liability in the field or in the batting order. More or less, shout LAI or Fire Rizzo, but don't be a bunch of idiots and saying he's unfit to be on a baseball team and a  non-contributor.

I don't think that is even in the equation . It jusn't make sense. PF doesn't fill a need and Zim being traded creates a hole.
