San Diego has a solid team. Headley is a solid piece, but they have a good prospect in Jedd Gyorko in the minors, so they could trade Headley for something really good if the want to this winter. Yonder and Yasmani are great young pieces, Forsythe and Amarista are two very solid young middle infield options, Carlos Quentin is very potent bat, and Will Venable is underrated. Their issue this year was injuries. They might have had a shot at an over .500 season if they had been healthy all year.

There was a third piece in the A-Gon to Boston deal.  Along with Kelly and Rizzo, the Sox sent a former 1st rounder, Reymond Fuentes, who is a young outfielder who steals but has problems getting on base (likely a bust).  Kelly was hurt most of this year but was untouchable at 3 levels of the minors coming back.  As in 39 Ks, 3 BBs over 37.2 innings, 1.95 FIP, per Cistulli.  his reputation took a bit of a hit last year, but he was the prize in the deal, not Rizzo.  Had elbow inflammation this year.  He's 22.

Really? As a baseball fan that doesn't follow the Red Sox particularly closely, I always thought Rizzo was the centerpiece. Interesting.

Still got 'em by percentage points.  We've only got 50 losses, they've got 52.

Both were about the same age and level, but Rizzo wasn't supposed to have the power he has shown.  Both were rated peak 5.0 WAR guys, so they were close.  Eye of the rater, i guess.

A lot of teams wanted him as a pitcher, but he wanted to play SS. The first year in the minors, he played SS.  The next year, he pitched his innings then went back to SS for the rest of the year. couldn't hit, so decided to focus on pitching.

That happens a lot in football, especially college.  A kid will be recruited as an athlete.  Most teams will want him as a DB, he'll want a shot at QB or RB, so one team will give him a shot, it won't work out and will move him back to the secondary.

More Milone - discussion of his change up as being the best this year:
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/daily-notes-largely-concerning-tom-milones-change/

Quote
Leaderboard: Runs from Changeup
Milone’s changeup has not only been his best pitch, but, in fact, has been the entire league’s best changeup. Here are the top-10 pitchers by pitch-type runs for changeups. (Hor and Ver represent horizontal and vertical movement relative to a spinless ball.)

Name Team IP CH% MPH Hor. Ver. Runs R/100
Jason Vargas Mariners 180.0 25.7% 79.8 11.2 2.9 16.1 2.4
Tommy Milone Athletics 153.1 25.3% 80.2 10.2 3.6 16.1 2.7
Fernando Rodney Rays 58.2 35.4% 82.5 -8.0 1.7 14.3 4.6
Cole Hamels Phillies 177.1 29.6% 83.8 8.2 6.7 11.7 1.5
Alex Cobb Rays 102.0 34.9% 84.6 -5.9 1.0 10.8 1.9
Kris Medlen Braves 87.0 20.0% 81.2 -8.5 5.1 10.7 4.3
Chris Capuano Dodgers 162.2 25.1% 77.7 8.1 4.2 10.6 1.8
James Shields Rays 175.0 29.0% 84.9 -6.8 3.2 9.2 1.1
Tyler Clippard Nationals 58.1 36.1% 81.1 -6.7 7.8 8.7 2.4
Felix Hernandez Mariners 196.2 26.1% 89.3 -5.6 1.9 8.5 1.2

One Consequence of Milone’s Excellent Changeup
One consequence of Milone’s excellent changeup is (possibly) that he’s more effective against right- than left-handed batters. For example, here’s what left-handers are batting off him: 172 PA, .255/.322/.406 (.280 BABIP), .319 wOBA. And here’s right-handed ones: 457 PA, .256/.287/.399 (.287 BABIP), .290 wOBA.

MLBTR:

Quote
The Dodgers called the Yankees to inquire about the possibility of trading for C.C. Sabathia and Mark Teixeira, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. The Yankees told the Dodgers they had no interest in moving either player despite their substantial contracts (four years and $99MM remain on Sabathia’s deal; four years and $90MM remain on Teixeira’s deal).

I wonder if they called us about Werth?

i was actually thinking that myself.  We could have possibly unloaded werth and all that he's owed.  Too late now I guess now that they are committed to kemp, crawford, and ethier.  at least it gets rid of a major suitor for hamilton

I don't get it. They are playing great ball catching the Yankees for the division. First winning season in a long time. Great weather. Nats out of town. Where are their "fans"?
