One potential development, though, could add to the Nationals’ argument. The Nationals have been in talks with free agent first baseman Prince Fielder, a power hitter who would make the Nationals a contender. If the Nationals added Fielder, it could boost their desirability as a television entity.  “I think it would,” Zimbalist said. “Somebody like Fielder offers the possibility of not only the team being more competitive, but generating excitement in his own right.”

Nah. I never assumed signing Fielder was a given. I'm happy to compete with the team we have. If we get him with a sane deal, great. If not, that's great too. We move on.

Either way, ST starts in less than one month and OD is less than 3 months away. I won't let the machinations of FA ruin that excitement for me.

I'm sick of it too. Such is the risk of following anything too closely, I guess.

But I try to put it into perspective. He won't put food on my table. In fact, if I invited him over, he would take plenty of food OFF of it.

This could be just posturing by the GM. You know, "we have a tight budget so take less, PF."

I have come to the conclusion that if Prince doesn't sign with the Nats, it will be because he didn't want to be here. It won't be over money. And if that's the case, who wants him anyway.

My opinion has always been that he ends up in Texas.  And I don't want him here if he doesn't want to be here but the reality is that there may just be too much money on the table for him to turn down.  If that Nats are at 6 or 7 years at 24/year and the Rangers can only do a 3 year with an opt out at less money then that's the scenario where I see him ending up here. 

I don't mind if he prefers Texas and we are a close second.  I would prefer Texas too because they are closer to winning.  But if he desperately wants to be there and really has no interest in being here then screw him.

I don't mind if he prefers Texas and we are a close second.  I would prefer Texas too because they are closer to winning.  But if he desperately wants to be there and really has no interest in being here then screw him. 

While I normally agree with the "closer to winning" idea and yes, they were in the World Series two years in a row, I think we have a better chance long term. I mean, if he goes there on a 3-4 yr deal for some reason then thats the obvious choice. If he come here on a 6-7 year deal, then I see us being more competitive following this year.

It would be insane to see Kinsler, Hamilton, Fielder, Cruz, Napoli, and Beltre all in the same lineup. It would be even cooler to see him batting fourth between Zimmerman and Morse though!

Anyone listen to XM MLB around 8-8:30 this morning. They listed all the teams that they think are now back in it for Fielder, given the Darvish signing and the current theory that his market value is, at the moment, 5 years/150M.  They listed about 12 teams, with the Nationals about in the middle of the pack.

It's not like we lost 100 game last year. C'Mon. We are a team that's on the verge of playoff contention, according to most. The days of us having to beg for FA are over. If he doesn't get that, then eff him and the buffet table he's attached to.

I understand but I don't think we need to grossly overpay anymore like we did with Werth. Yes, there are some doubters out there but real smart baseball people know that this franchise is headed in the right direction.

True. It only takes Fielder to go to Texas for less money to prove us wrong though. I mean, it is a good sign that Gio wanted to be here and immediately wanted an extension.

I agree. The Rangers are going to swoop in and get him despite what their GM says. It makes the most sense.
