Grab our torches and head over to Powerboater's houseboat on the Anacostia for a good ol' fashioned mob scene?

Don't blame me if Lerner cheaps out, blame Ric Andersen for spreading the bad info.

Ric Andersen is not in the know in the baseball world. He knows less than WNFF posters about what's going on.

The Nats are not in the mix for Prince.

Long day at work, I'm tired, still confident that Lerner gets this deal done, although if there is no announcement 24 hours from now the Natitude tread may have a new header.

As soon as the Fielder numbers are announced at 7 years at 23 million/year plus incentives Ric will be the most credible source in the history of Twitter.

Signing players or improving the team is a pass/fail operation. Either you get the guy or you don't. If you don't get the guy that you want or need, then you have failed. Doesn't matter if you are a dime short or $10 million.

I'm not sure if the Nats would be better with or without Fielder. But if Rizzo thinks he'd improve the team, then it's a fail if he signs elsewhere.

So what does this have to do with my response to Ray?  (hint, go read his comment and my response in context).

Kilgore hit the nail on the head in today's NATIONALS JOURNAL:

 http://mobile.washingtonpost.com/rss.jsp;jsessionid=AD38228A45417E3A0D622DE6966214F1?rssid=607&item=http%3a%2f%2fwww.washingtonpost.com%2fFragment%2fSysConfig%2fWebPortal%2ftwpweb%2ffeeds%2fBlogsMobileIndividual%2fmobile-blogs.jpp%3fid%3d1000.3.1279687840%26uuid%3dfd1da4f4-3754-11e1-81ef-eaf2bd09c8a2&cid=961405

That article did a really good job of explaining it.

Not signing Fielder only gives the Nats the potential to keep the core together.  Unless those guys sign extensions they're free to leave for Free Agency.
You need to read the article. The only one of our core guys that's going to be a free agent soon will Zimmerman. Everyone else will be expensive via arbitration. With backloaded contracts of Fielder and Werth, some of those guys may have to be traded earlier than desired by the fan base.

First page and I already had to dismiss it as nonsense:

With all the disposable income in the DMV area, a coming bump in television revenue and the Lerner’s billionaire wealth, Washington can be that kind of market.

The bump isn't here yet. And why blow it all on one free agent signing?

These are tough times financially and people didnt exactly flock to the park last year.

Why are the Lerners expected to dig out of their own pockets to pay payroll? That is bad business.

If we can have Fielder for six ears or less, I'm interested. But 7 or more simply makes it another albatross

Somehow I think with 36 million lying around they could figure a way to pay for Prince without using their own money.

They have plenty of flexibility to sign Prince.  PLENTY.  They also have plenty of room to spare their pockets.

It's not just Prince. It's a long term deal for Zimmerman and Strasburg. It's hanging on to guys like JZ, clippard, Storen and Espinosa.

In a few short years, the payroll will easily be approaching 100 million with arbitration alone.

Where are all the phonies and liars at now? This crap was just like the Teixeria garbage a few years ago with those jerks from Maine. Nothing but lies and bullcrap once again. The Nats are not even in the running for Prince.

Bowden lays out why the Nats need to pull the trigger on a Fielder deal (with my two cents on his reasons thrown in for good measure):

http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?w=1bd0j&disableShare=true&adBlock=block&i=FB&id=3133&hidePageFooter=true&hidePageHeader=true&blogname=the-gms-office&wjb

Reason 1: The chance to win now - check; let's worry about making the most of the salad days of Stras, the Zimms, etc. under the leadership of a manager who's been at the top before.

Reason 2: A long-term solution for run production - check, for the nine billion reasons already noted in this thread.

Reason 3: Win now for owner Ted Lerner - C'mon junior Lerners, go all in for Pop!

Reason 4: Leadership for Harper and young players - See, this is where the Caps and Pens diverged, to the betterment of the Pens.  McPhee eschewed the vets (or went dumpster diving for the likes of Corvo who gave age rather than maturity) for the most part for the sake of roster flexibility and a future window always a year or two down the road.  The sole exception was getting Fedorov for a song, who promptly showed leadership and got the Caps the furthest they've gone in their ongoing 'window.'  On the other hand, the Pens prioritized roster space and spending towawrds vets that helped develop the on-roster talent, and they've already got a Cup and other deep trips into the playoffs under their belts.

Reason 5: Drawing card and diversity - In other words, make the buzz about the Nats in as big a way as possible inside and outside the Beltway, and make a mark like the Skins did with titles and which the Caps haven't with wide-open windows and management/ownership too timid to go for the gold in the name of future roster flexibility.  (See 'Ovechkin, Alex', 7 seasons under his belt and still waiting for the Caps to go all in during their 'window'...)

1) The bump isn't here yet. And why blow it all on one free agent signing?
2) These are tough times financially and people didnt exactly flock to the park last year.
3) Why are the Lerners expected to dig out of their own pockets to pay payroll? That is bad business.
4) If we can have Fielder for six ears or less, I'm interested. But 7 or more simply makes it another albatross

1) The bump is here, the official amount has not been announced and probably not even been determined, but the Lerner family is aware of the parameters for the renegotiation, so they know the floor for the increase.
2) Times aren't so tough in DC, we've got the one local economy in the country that has been barely touched by the dip or even the double dip.  The Caps are selling out every game with much higher ticket prices for comparable seats.
3) Why wouldn't a business owner be expected to invest in his own business, is that really the question?  These guys have had a ballpark given to them by the city.  Cooke built his own stadium, Pollin built his own arena, the United are going to build their own stadium or leave town, so we're not asking that much for a reasonable payroll expenditure from a team that has received an unprecedented amount of corporate welfare.  And in any case, based on the Forbes estimates, payroll can increase by a huge amount without requiring any out of pocket expenses from the miser.
4) Six is fine but seven is too much huh?  To bad, that's the deal.  Who gives a crap about 2018 anyway?  Win now and worry about then end of the decade when the time comes.  Oh no, we might lose a home grown player!  Wah!
