He's a free agent next offseason. No posting required.

can yu find a link?  I've seen people say that he has 1 year left on his contract but I've seen others say he has two.

it's the opportunity cost for both the extra year and the exclusive negotiating rights

There is no opportunity cost for exclusive negotiating rights because the implication with that statement is that the Rangers would have leverage, when they really don't have that much leverage because Yu can just wait a year and make more $ on the open market. For the Rangers, they would have to pay less money on the open market for Yu as the #1 team than they would under the posting system.

that would be the opportunity cost- right now, it costs them the posting fee for the extra year and the exclusive rights- it might not be cheaper next year because he could decide he wants to be a yankee/red sox, live in a certain city, pitch in a friendlier park, play in the NL... or any number of other things that could have him playing elsewhere.

Yes but he could want that this year and hold out as well. Next year, the Rangers could outbid the Sox or Yanks at far less than 5/120.

From Darvish's point of view, if he returns to Japan for two more seasons, he can become an independent free agent in 2014. That $51.7 million posting fee ticketed for the Nippon Ham Fighters could be rerouted his way in an open market.

An unrestricted free agent at 27, Darvish could choose his destination.

he is a free agent AFTER 2013.  I can see him waiting that long to sign though.  He has never seemed in a rush to get over here so I don't see why its any different now.  He could just be trying to get a bearing on how much ML clubs think he is worth so he knows what to be asking for when he is a free agent.

If the high bid for Yu Darvish is substantial, "he will be far less likely to settle on a contract he believes fair," Yahoo's Jeff Passan writes. Darvish, who believes the posting system is unfair, would prefer to play for a West Coast team, Passan reports.

That makes no sense at all.  If he believes a contract is fair he is less likely to settle?  Okay, give him an unfair contract, is that what he wants?

I think he means that it's not likely that the two sides can settle on what each feels is a fair contract.

I think he means that the Rangers may need to overspend to get him signed. He wants more than fair.

It's a catch-22.  If he waits, teams will be trying to sign him around his age 30 season, so they probably won't be willing to pay quite as much in total.

Or he doesn't want to give 50 million worth of a fair deal to his NPL team, and unless the aav of his contract with Texas would make up for it, he probably is better off waiting to come over as a free agent

Actually he would still only be 27 so he could and probably would get a larger deal then he would through posting.

the rangers are reportedly offering Yu Daisuke money and they aren't close to a deal at this point.  I will continue hoping to see him in a nats uni in 2013
