Just a heads up, here is a video of Hayden Jennings:

The editing drives me nuts. Half the clips start with him already swinging.

He looked fast as heck against the competition. In one clip I like how he had his hands on his knees during his lead to make it look like he wasn't thinking about stealing.

Considering kieboom wasn't even a top 500 prospect saving only 50000 is dissappointing

Yeah, apparently it was only a 33K savings, as he signed for 200K, with 233K being slot.

Not trying to point fingers at NFA Brian, because he's the only one that could even wager guesses at the calculations(and am appreciative that he did make it simpler for us to look at), but so far, his calculations have been off. His guesses had us saving over 800K, but so far Miller got 50K more, Kieboom 100K more, and Jennings 25K more. If the rest of his projections are correct, we've only opened up $660K extra for Giolito.

Lets hope Renda and Mooneyham come in well under their slots.

I didnt even notice it right away, but if you read the comments under the video, it appears Hayden edited it himself, and posted it on YouTube.

i'm expecting renda to be about 100k or so under slot.  Mooneyham will be tough to get below slot.  Remember, his agent is boras.

Yeah, I dont think Mooneyham will bring about a major under slot, but we supposedly knew values before we selected them, and we've dealt with Boras before. Mooneyham doesn't have a whole lot of leverage here - He's already a year older than the typical college draftee, and has control issues. If he returns to school for another year and still has control problems, his price tag drops considerably. So I believe there is reason for hope in at least some savings. At this point, anything that can be added to the pot is helpful.

Definitely glad to have him. Him and his family seem excited to become a part of the Nationals organization, and he gives the team a good, young talent in the OF.

yea, lets all hope a bunch of guys we drafted, presumably to be part of the team, agree to less money so that we can kick a few hundred thousand more to some 18 year old who may or may not need TJ.

...as opposed to hoping our team pays them more money and we don't sign our first round draft pick?

If he really thinks he can make top of the first round money, he's not signing- even with and extra 800k (bringing the offer to ~2.9 million), we're still short of slot at pick 7. When other teams pass on a guy because of medicals and the nats pounce, I don't necessarily trust our medical staff more than every other team's that passes on a guy. At the end of the day, he's a high school pitcher, and regardless of stuff and pedigree, the fail rate is still astronomical even without the injury.

I don't trust our medical staff but I do trust our front office when it comes to the draft.

That's what makes the Giolito situation so interesting (and concerning).

He didnt fall just because of medical evals. The new slotting system also played a role. Arguably as much as the injury concern.

Also, the money issue isn't black and white. If the injury is as serious as you seem to think it may be, then obviously grabbing the money now is a wise move. If the injury isn't a concern, there are still positives to signing now. As good as Giolito is and has been projected to be, he could be up in the bigs by the time he's drafted again after his junior year. The ability to cash in with a big league salary and extra years towards free agency pay off huge.

This definitely isn't a situation we've seen before very many times, but you have to be happy we are the team that has the shot at getting Giolito signed. Even if he needs TJ, which is premature at this point, whats the big deal? He has surgery, sits out a year, and is still Nationals property. Id rather have him making his pro debut at 19 as a member of the Nationals organization, then pitching for the UCLA Bruins for the next three seasons and being totally out of our draft range.

There is no reason to be down or negative about having Giolito as Nationals property.

So you want guys that were clearly over drafts to sign for more money than they're worth, rather than give it to the most talented player in the draft? The draft is a crapshoot period. Absolutely. But you pay for the talent when its there for you, and you have to be excited about having such a talent in your system.

Or you can continue to be negative, overpay for guys you drafted 5 rounds early, and hope one of them emerge as an impact player.

ESPN's Jayson Stark hears that the Pirates are expected to offer eighth overall pick and Stanford right-hander Mark Appel a slot $2.9MM signing bonus and hold the line until the July 13th deadline as they sign their other picks. "I don't see how," said one executive when asked if a deal will get done between the team and the Scott Boras client.

I don't think he got out of the 2nd inning.  6-0 Seminoles and he's not throwing.

Renda signed for 500K:

That's another 130K that can go towards Giolito.
