I'm fully expecting Rizzo to make another splash.  I don't know if that comes by signing CC, Wilson, Reyes, or Fielder or they trade for someone but I think we'll see some big moves.  I don't think we'll see the payroll get over $75 mil next year unless they extend Zim this winter, too.

Sorry but something here doesn't make sense - he'll make a big splash but unless they extend Zimmmmmmm the payroll doesn't exceed $75m?

What is the payroll at with everything that is coming off. Of course I don't think a Zimmerman extension would even effect next year.

Right.  We're at what, 60ish right now?  With about 20 coming off, I believe.  I don't see them adding 35 for next year w/o also extending Zim.

Edit: they're closer to 70 than I thought, so they probably would get to the 75 range easier than I thought.

Marquis is 7.5 and Pudge is 3. Plus about five other guys is 18 million coming off the books.

Well, let's see we were at about 65 to start the year, so the guys that were traded are included in what come off: So, we've got Wang (1), Marquis (7.5), Pudge (3), Nix (.7), Hairston (2), Cora (.9), Ankiel (1.5), Coffey (1.35) and Livo (1).  That's 18.95 off the season opening payroll.  Now, some of those guys might come back and Morse and a couple other guys will probably get a bump in salary, so they're basically starting from about the 50 mil level, perhaps a little higher.

anyone starting to notice the makings of a Nationals bandwagon?  It seems everywhere I turn lately someone is touting the Nats as the team to watch in 2012.

Do we need to call Kornheiser?

Based on the chatter surrounding them being connected to this team, I would guess that both BJ Upton and Edwin Jackson will be Nationals next year.

I've seen a lot more Nats gear worn by the general public recently.

If the Nationals win a World Series while the Redskins keep struggling and the Caps keep coming up a day late and 65p short in post-season, our local MLB side will blow the lid off the local sports scene and you'll be seeing Nats gear like we've been seeing Redskins gear all these years. This town loves winners.

They were doing Mike and Mike from Dallas this morning and someone in the audience was wearing a Nationals t-shirt.

I've told you all the Nats are getting a small following nationally. Northwest Arkansas is a baseball hot bed between the Royals, Braves, Cardinals, and Rangers and of course the Razorbacks. Still, I see Strasburg shirts sort of often, including a day this year I wore mine and saw two other kids on campus with them. See a few Harper shirts here and there and I've seen a couple kids at a local baseball league who play 3B wearing Zimmerman shirts.

The battle in baseball in attracting the average fan since outside of the Yankees it is hard to pick out individual stars. The Nationals here in as little as two or three years could have the best pitcher and best hitter in baseball. Strasburg is already one of the biggest NAME players in all of baseball to the average fan. If we win, we'll have fans.

Also doesn't hurt that college kids around the nation flock to DC for internships, catch a lot of baseball at Nationals Park, and go back to whereever they're from with a soft spot for baseball. I know a few kids I have gone to school with who now route at least casually for the Nationals after time spent in DC.

We're in the nation's capital. We have the elite talent to turn heads nationally. The future is so bright I gotta wear shades.

Except Kornheiser is a baseball idiot. Ask him anything about old school basketball, he can quote chapter and verse. But baseball is a foreign language to Mr. Tony.

Unfortunate.

Agreed, plus he was as contemptuous of us getting a team here as could be.  He's part of the Yankees / Red Sox nexus who really can't be bothered to pay attention to anything else.   What he might think is completely irrelevant to anything Nats related.

Has Jackson been connected to the team since the trade talks last year?  I haven't seen it outside of a few people on here.  And now that the Rays are back in the playoffs and will have a bunch of that team back next year (at least I assume they will) I don't see the Rays in a hurry to unload Upton.

I can't believe they let that moron on Monday night football for a couple of seasons. It was like having Debbi Taylor in the booth for the entire game.

Dennis Miller and Tony K should be in the booth next year for MASN.  That would be awesome.  Pat Summerall for play by play.

Edwin Jackson is probably the 2nd or 3rd best pitcher on the market this year.  If he doesn't move your needle (WANG!), then we're probably better off waiting until after next year to add that big time pitcher - Greinke will be available along with several others - http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/04/2013-mlb-free-agents.html

I'm wary of giving $100 million to a guy who has only had a couple of really good years - your guess as to whether I'm talking about CJ Wilson or the guy who signed last offseason.

We need Gio.  I also wouldn't put it past Rizzo to throw money at CC when he opts out.
