...and it was not not uncommon, and is still legal, for a tailback or fullback to take the snap, run wide, drop the ball, and kick a field-goal when the ball touches the ground. Called a drop-kick. Has to touch the ground or else it's a punt. Some time in the '30s the made the football more pointed, so drop-kicks became very tough. We used to practice it when we were about ten...never saw anybody try it.
Oh, and to make this Nats-relevant, maybe...the Nats and the Redskins used to play a touch football game just at the end of the baseball regular season. Each team in their home uniform, hats and helmets. Today's kids have a Presidents' Race...we had Chuck Stobbs at QB. (maybe Stobbs...I can't remember...)
