You trade from areas of surplus. Trading to get pieces just because you have some decent prospects has always seemed backwards to me.
Well the Nats do have a SP surplus, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to trade him for a line-up piece.
Meyer is atleast two years away from the Majors and has the highest cieling of any Nats pitcher in the minors besides Purke. Doubt we trade him I can see guys like Solis(when healthy), Rosenbaum and possibly Ray getting traded away for pieces in the line up.
because other teams prefer trading for guys with lower ceilings
While detailing the “next wave” of Nationals prospects, Rizzo mentioned two by name: Alex Meyer and Matt Purke. Meyer, a 6-foot-10 flamethrower from Kentucky, “looks like he’s 11 feet tall on the mound,” Rizzo said. “He’ll be here soon.”
Meyer is one of them. Unless we're getting a player like Gio Gonzalez(i.e. All-Star, young, projected above average starter for years to come, aka players that most teams don't trade) in return I don't see him trading one of his favorites.
Cole was one of Rizzo's favorites and he was traded.
For a guy like Gio (specifically Gio)
If you are in a playoff run, playoffs come first, not holding on to all the prospects. One of the purposes of farm systems is to provide trade fodder.
Meyer has been doing a lot better recently. Went 7 IP and 1 ER in his last start I believe.
On May 11, Meyer's final line: 6 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO.
