I hardly think so. I've always respected Ladson, dating back to his days with the Expos too.

So your favorite players are Bruce Harper and Adam Zimmerman?

Package D: Crap, Crap, Crap, Crap - Braves

Astros: We like it. I'm glad we only asked the Nats for good players!

I agree if they viewed the Braves crap and our crap as the same thing.

Let me ask you this though; Lombo is pretty highly regarded amongst Nats fans but the general consensus on him outside of Natsville is that he's a utility guy.

Same with Marrero.

So what if their offer was something like Detwiler, Lombo, Marrero and C level prospect in A ball like Taylor Jordan.

To most that may seem like crap, crap, crap and crap but to the Nats it would probably be too much for a guy under control only through 2012.

Maybe you agree or maybe you don't. But unless someone can with absolute certainty tell us what players Houston wanted with Detwiler everything is a mindfact.

We may disagree with how Ladson shares his opinions, but when has he been wrong with a source? The guy has more connections than Kilgore or Zuckerman and when has he been wrong?

Package A: Lombardozzi, Detwiler, Solis, Ray
Package B: Norris, Hood, Cole, Detwiler

Detwiler is part of both packages. Therefore the above quote is true.

B is night and day better than package A.

Never been wrong as far as I can tell.

Indeed. I know some don't like him, but that's fine by me. People can have opinions. :)

Well, I suppose this thread can be bumped for the waiver deal trade deadline of 8/31.

There was some interesting speculation on whether the Astros might try to put Wandy through waivers and not pull him back if a team claims him.  They need to cut salary.  The The author suspects that the reason the Astros are saying "we'll only get rid of him if we get something back" is to lure teams into claiming him thinking they will not get stuck with the 3/$36MM he is owed.  While the author does not mention the Nats as a possible claimant, the first commenter does.

Because there are so few teams that would risk the possibility of having Rodriguez and his salary dumped in their laps, it remains unlikely that any team will claim Rodriguez on waivers. There might be a growing belief that a team will make a claim, but if we examine the whole picture it just doesn’t seem feasible. It also doesn’t seem feasible that the Astros would pull back Rodriguez rather than dump him wholesale on a claiming team. They need to cut payroll, and Rodriguez represents a decent chunk of their 2012 commitments. They might prefer to get something in return, but they’re not in a position to be picky right now.

The contract seems to be a lot less than Wilson or Jackson would command as FAs, and Wandy probably is someone who is between those two in terms of quality. I'd like to see the Nats claim him if he is put on waivers, and slot him between Stras and JZ next year.  Getting this taken care of before the off season would give the Nats more options for the last spot or two in the rotation.

As I said earlier, the Nats would be crazy not to eat the salary and bring him on. The likelihood of Rizzo either having the money or brain power to do so, though, is unlikely. Ole Mikey don't seem to keen on acquiring talent in non-traditional ways.

While this would be a decent move, it's inconsistent with the recent salary relief moves made at the end of July in order to shift that money to sign draft picks.   :?   Our payroll reflects both MLB salary AND draft picks.  :lmao:

Incidentally, the signing deadline for draft picks is Monday, correct? If so, we should be hearing news of signings this weekend.

You actually think there aren't people on message boards that are smarter than some GM's in charge?

I hear you.  You are right that the Rizzo himself has said that clearing salary was a goal of the deadline moves.  I hope it was only to prioritize the cash for the future rather than just budget cutting.  I hope someone is saying the money saved on Marquis can help pay ROS for Wandy.  Wandy's pay this year < Marquis.

JM Keynes: "Smithian economists say that the Depression will work itself out in the long run. Well, in the long run we are all dead." Approximately.

(In Nats terms: spend NOW, put some winners on the field, and develop the Rendons and other 2015 stars at the same time. Signing a fine $12 million pitcher pays for itself. Hoping that Josh Smoker and AJ Cole will be top-rotation starters in 2015 forgets that the franchise will be dead by 2015. Ten years of bad baseball causes fans to become interested in soccer and the Redskins OTAs.)

Yep, just look at the Tampa Bay Rays.  G-d help us if the DEADSKINZ ever get it together and start winning again.
