LMAO - so because he doesnt strike out a K per inning, he's the 57th best reliever in baseball?

Give me a break.

Absolute garbage. That's all it is.

Do you honestly believe Storen is the 57th best reliever in baseball?

Talent-wise, no. But he hasn't performed nearly as well as people think he has. There's a difference that you can't get past.

That doesn't change the fact that the perception of Storen doesn't match his results.

You won't find many people around baseball who agree with you on that.  This board is full of posters clamoring for a major trade to get done just for the sake of temporary excitement.

While I hate the idea of trading Storen, you're wrong about "many people around baseball."

You might want to change that to IMO.

You know what screams contention? Trading away half your team every year. 2012 is always a year away to the Nats.

I understand the past has made it tough on looking towards the playoffs.

But, next year is really the first year for legitimate hope. Strasburg's return. Zimmermann's emergence this year. Espinosa and Ramos breaking in this year. I know the offense needs a jolt, but I think we all expect Zim and Werth to be better next year.

We've made some strides this year, and next year should be another step up.

Thing is, the players we've given up this year were never in our future plans. They were stop gap solutions, that ended up fetching us something. I call those good moves.

But others may actually believe that I defend writers for the crap they write when I don't really give a crap about them.

This week is going to end up being one big freaking cocktease.

Prepare for it because the trade deadline is a little over an hour away.

At the game and although Bixler plays a good CF defensively, we're adding a CF today, aren't we?

Maybe Ive missed it, but I dont think anyone has really said he's as good as Mariano, or that he's one of the truly elite closers in baseball.

I wouldn't call him a Bell or Wilson, and even among young guys, I know he's not as dominant as Craig Kimbrel.

But he is a top 10 closer IMO. When you consider his age and that we have him for another 4 years at least, there's no reason to move him. If we were Houston - worst team in baseball and no immediate reason for hope - I get it, but we do have reason to expect an improvement next season. And he will be huge in the push for a playoff spot.

Now they're saying Philly the favorite for the Bell. Good lord.

FWIW, by SIERA, Storen is 48th among relievers this year.  Clippard is 16th.

THere are even a few who don't find our leadoff and #2 hitter situation acceptable, and want concrete steps taken to fix this black hole of run suckitude.

And if we can improve CF defense all the while giving us a top of the order on-base guy, all the better.

Media calling out the Twins from the past couple of days.

Example #1

Quote from: Rotoworld
Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports that the Twins want Roger Bernadina and a reliever in exchange for Denard Span.

We've heard Drew Storen's and Tyler Clippard's names being mentioned, and it was reported earlier this week that Bernadina might be part of a potential deal. But, we figured that was probably what the Nationals wanted to give up, not what the Twins wanted to get. Trading Span for a Bernadina and either of the aforementioned relievers would be foolish, but it appears the Twins might be willing to take the misstep.

Example #2

Quote
Trading Span for a reliever makes little sense

Position scarcity.

It's simply a lot more difficult to find above-average starting center fielders than it is to find late-inning relief pitchers. There's a reason why a guy like Kyle Farnsworth (4.28 career ERA) can randomly pop up as the Tampa Bay Rays' closer and have success.

If trading Span is about fixing the bullpen for a short-term playoff push, keep in mind the Twins already have Glen Perkins and Joe Nathan for the eighth and ninth innings. Any upgrade would come at the expense of guys like Alex Burnett, Jose Mijares and Phil Dumatrait.

The going rate for an upgrade over Burnett likely doesn't cost a starting center fielder.

If trading Span is about shoring up the bullpen long-term, keep in mind A.) Perkins is under contract at a reasonable price for 2012 and could just as easily be moved to the closer role, and B.) finding viable seventh- and eighth-inning options through free agency costs anywhere between $2-5 million per year.

Finding an outfielder of Span's caliber on the open market costs much more.

For the Nats?

no, league-wide.

Adams was traded to TEX. Ziegler, too. Two relievers and looks like Ludwick is on his way to PIT.
