You aren't being a jerk.  These are brand new stats that only stat geeks understand.  I'll only pay attention to the batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage until the day I die. The rest is like frickin algebra.

OK as long as you realize you're not getting as full a picture of a player's performance as those with a more expansive view are getting.

UZR is a defensive metric, BTW.

The most comparable player to Denard Span statistically is Jacoby Ellsbury.  I'm sorry guys, this is not worth trading Tyler Clippard and certainly not Drew Storen for.  There is some weird obsession with a leadoff hitting CF in D.C., when we could simply use Lombo as the leadoff man for many years to come without trading away our bullpen.  We saw how this worked out last time when we gave away a pitcher who wound up being an All-Star for a headcase in Nyjer and now a terrible pitcher in Burnett.  We need to be careful.

I sort of agree with this mentality but I believe the spending money part mostly relates to free agency. We obviously weren't going to win the series this year so its much better to get rid of Marquis and gain a prospect that could do something for this team with longer team control. If we got Span, he would also be on this team for a few years and he would be our leadoff/center fielder to boot. That's a trade that helps this team get a championship faster.

We are "obsessed" with a CF leadoff hitter because that would knock out two birds with one stone. Lombo is still in the minors. Span has been a lead off hitter as well as a great CF for a couple years now. He is proven, Lombo isn't. Lombo is a damn good hitter though and we can still use that. I would rather trade for a certain leadoff hitter than I would risk placing a rookie in a leadoff spot.

If I hear one more word about Joel freaking Hanrahan, I'm going to have a fit. He SUCKED here. Get it, he freakING SUCKED HERE. He's doing better now, good for him, who gives a crap. Trading him at the time was a NO BRAINER. He has no bearing on and no resemblance whatsoever to Drew Storen and the current situation now. None, zero, zilch, nada.

You have to be kidding. Ellsbury is miles ahead of Span or anyone else batting leadoff. Ellsbury is the best leadoff hitter in baseball right now and one of the top 3 centerfielders.
