wat.  we have to be getting a CF with no Bernie or Hairston.

Yeah, there must be something else going on. We can't just have Ankiel every day can we?

@MarkZuckerman says
Can't imagine #Nats will go rest of season with only Rick Ankiel in CF. Gotta have something else in the works.

Zuckerman reports we are getting AA OF Eric Komatsu for Hairston

10) Eric Komatsu, OF, Grade C+:   .290/.389/.413 with 52 walks, 44 strikeouts in 317 at-bats for Huntsville, 13 steals in 19 attempts. Good on-base skills, mediocre power.

The Nationals are pushing setup man Tyler Clippard on the Twins for center fielder Denard Span over closer Drew Storen, tweets Scott Miller of CBS Sports.  He says the Twins won't trade Span for a setup man, however.

Aside from saves, Storen comes with one more year of team control than Clippard.  Still, we're talking about 2015 and 2016, and there's no telling what can happen with relievers in the course of several years.

In other words, we've added a position player version of Aaron Thompson.  :?

I think he's a bit better. Was Brewers Minor League Player of the Year in 2010.

Career .310/.398/.449/.847 MiLB hitter who plays Center Field.

I wonder if the Nats plan on just bringing him up in September and letting him skip AAA.

Hairston / Komatsu not final yet.

Komatsu is their 14th ranked prospect (BA), is in AA, can play all three OF positions. He went to Fullerton.

Solid return. However, I think it clearly shows we're waving the flag on this season. Hairston isn't irreplaceable but he was helping win some games. Komatsu would be a nice pickup if he has defensive ability to go with his OBP skills.

Dude get on base a ton. .398 OBP in the minors, .393 this year.

Is he Boomer Whiting V.2, though?

Ok, if he can actually play all three outfield positions I really like this move. Could be a good 4th OFer someday. If his glove is a plus, at the least he is a solid bench piece,  a la Jerry Hairston.

You can’t talk Brewer prospects without talking about the 2010 Robin Yount performance player of the year Erik Komatsu. The 5′ 10″ outfielder was drafted in the 8th round of the 2008 amateur draft out of Cal State Fullerton. Playing at high A, Brevard County, the 22 year absolutely racked. Using a sweet left handed stroke he went on to bat .323 with 28 stolen bases. He also had a .413 OBP while walking more times then striking out, 68-61.

Scouting Report:

Komatsu has very good swing mechanics and bat speed that allows him to lace pitches to all parts of the field but lacks consistent power. He’s a good all-round, heady ballplayer that can swipe a bag or two and plays good defense in the outfield with average arm stregnth. He’s a little on the shorter side, which makes him easy to compare to Caleb Gindl.

Projection:

Komatsu is currently being projected as a 4th outfielder do to his lack of pop.  If he can develop some more power he could become an everyday left fielder.

Yeah, Komatsu could simply end up being the 2012-15 version of Jerry Hairston. In which case, it's a fairly good deal all around. That on-base percentage is Lombardozzian.

AKA, solid trade. Brewers get a guy who will help them in a division race. We get a guy who may help us in the future.

Solid return. However, I think it clearly shows we're waving the flag on this season.

Eh, I think the flag was waved before spring training began, un-waved when we hit that big 8-game win streak, and now re-waved because of the new big streak. It's probably deserved. After this blip we'll do the .500ish thing again for another month and come out at 75 wins just like everybody always thought.

EDIT: Agreed with your new post. Solid trade.

Also, we traded a 35 y/o for a 23 y/o. Poptart kitten will be stroking it.

You know what else?  We're dangerously short on veteran leadership with no Hairston and no Stairs.  Only Pudge and Cora.

:panic:

I guess Davey J doesn't value veteran-i-ness as much as Riggles did.

I don't think either of them could keep Rizzo from trading whatever he can from this broken team.

So who will it be, Span or Upton?    BTW, the Brewers also signed Flop recently.

From NATS JOURNAL:

Nationals trade Jerry Hairston to the Brewers
By Adam Kilgore
The Nationals traded utility player Jerry Hairston to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league outfielder Erik Komatsu. Brian Bixler will be called up to take Hairston’s spot on the active roster.

Komatsu, 23, was drafted in the eighth round of the 2008 draft. At Class AA Huntsville this season, Komatsu has hit .294/.393/.416 with six home runs and 13 stolen bases.

Hairston filled a versatile, valuable role for the Nationals this season, becoming the regular third baseman as Ryan Zimmerman missed two months with a torn abdominal muscle. He also played left and center field and came off the bench as a right-handed pinch-hitter. Hairston hit .268/.342/.385 with four homers and two stolen bases in 75 games.

This winter, Hairston signed a $2 million, one-year deal to play for the Nationals. The Brewers will pick up the remainder of his salary, saving the Nationals about $650,000.

The Brewers and Nationals also completed a trade this spring, when the Nationals sent outfielder Nyjer Morgan to Milwaukee for minor league infielder Cutter Dykstra.

Bummer to see Jerry go, he was a fine contributor, particularly when Zim was out. Best of luck to him. I'll be rooting for him.
