I'd rather not depend on it- the Yankees have a third baseman on his last legs and we're talking about a guy who won't sign a kid's ball for free
Still waiting for someone to tell me what is this about Zimmerman not signing a kid's ball for free

He has been known to refuse autographs because he only does paid autograph sessions (I think it happened to a member here).

Oh really?

Then yea, trade him in his contract year. Screw it. If he really wants to be here, he can re-sign with the Nats in the offseason.

Wait wait wait - People are judging a player about what he does off the field for fans? LOL. I really don't care if he doesn't sign baseballs as long as he produces.

I think they're trying to say "he's only in it for the money".

Fine. Work out a deal before the trade deadline in 2013. If not, trade him for some good prospects. If you still want him on your team after that, go offer what everyone else is offering. If not ... hopefully Rendon is good

Good point. And with that I respond: Why do you (not you but you generalized) give a crap? Every player doesn't need to love the place they play at. This game is a business and a job. Not a community service.

i've heard so many people nag about harper and zimmerman not sign autographs, i have witnessed with my own two eyes that they both have.

as much as i want a CF and leadoff hitter, i don't understand trading your young closer?  like who the freak else is going to step in and do the job for the next 5 years?

and if we add a speedster like span, we'll still need another power bat in the line-up.  can't go into next year with this craphole line-up and payroll again.  oh wait we will.

again i'll take span but giving up storen?  what about that great farm system we've been pumping for the last few years.

Smoker?  Or perhaps they consider Ray/Peacock/Cole a potential closer?  Valverde & Madson are free agents next year.  Maybe they will go all out for Bell?  Broxton and Capps are available next year too.   And of course there is always Clippard who has long professed a desire to close.

i wouldn't give up clippard/ramos/storen they are young, under control and are pretty valuable so far in their careers.

Rizzo has seemingly been obsessed with trying to find a lead-off CF (Nyjer, Brown, and now Span (or any one of the half dozen other names being mentioned).  I can understand his view given how pathetic our lead-off production is this year.

Lots of teams find a rent-a-closer and do quite well.  There are a lot of decent names out there for next year.

(BTW, personally I would HATE to see Storen traded, I love watching the guy).

glad you have full faith in the lerners to open their wallet in the offseason.

You don't give up junk for something good.  I like Storen, but depending on the package, he goes.  Ramos would be pretty much untouchable.  Who would replace him.  Flores sucks now, and Pudge is approx 749 years old.

Excellent.

Guys, Span is far, far better than the CFs you guys are mentioning (Nyjer, Brown, Upton, etc.).  And Clippard can easily step into the closer's role.

I'm not even going to continue this line of banter. It's ridiculous. It has nothing to do with trading Ramos for Upton, which would be a bad trade.

I know that it would be a bad trade, I wasn't talking about this. But this isn't a ridiculous conversation at all. Whatever...
