are you guys laughing at the thought of detwiler because it's too much or because he should be traded?

Maybe the Astros want Detwiler for Pence.   :az:

I keep hearing the mediots describing the pitchers the Nationals might trade as "not a difference maker".

BJ Upton is the dictionary definition of "not a difference maker".

God help me.  I agree with PC.

Game.

There is a ton of "if" in that statement.

Not trying to turn it into a "RAWRZ NOT AS GOOD AS THE PHILZ" pissing contest, but as A Phillies fan, i can see that as a "potential" top 5 rotation (assuming CC Sabathia doesnt come to the NL)

But as I said, there is a ton of "if" in that - something to look forward to, thats for sure.

Oswalt is not long for baseball.

Stras, Zimm, 1 more elite pitcher, is that as good as Halliday, Hamels, Lee - the answer is yes, especially at the Nats pitchers will improve with age and the Phils pitchers will decline.

I think you are overvaluing the Nats pitchers with this statement.

Lee is old. He's great now but he won't continue like this. Halliday is the best pitcher in baseball. Strasburg could easily assume that mantle. Hamels==Zimmermman in my opinion, but Hamels should continue to improve as well.

lol yeah.  i like strasburg and zimmermann as the next guy, but the phillies big four are all proven starters and have been doing it for years with many accolades, playoff appearances, etc.

sometimes the LANC/sunshine squad is too much for me :lmao:

I think it's a matter of perspective, though.  Five years from now, will you say the same thing when the Phillies maybe have an aging Lee, an aging Halladay, no Oswalt and Hamels gone free agent?  It depends on your point of view, I guess.

Ah yes.  The real reason you posted....    :?

That's twice we've been taken way off-topic: Werth and now the Phillies staff.

Eric Seidman from Fangraphs on Nats necessities at the trade deadline:
Quote
#22 – Washington Nationals
They are clearly out of the NL East and Wild Card races, and the only player even mentioned on the rumor mill is Tyler Clippard, a top-notch reliever who won’t reach free agency until the 2016 season. The focus is, and should be, on next season when Stephen Strasburg is (hopefully) healthy, Bryce Harper is forcing his way onto the major league roster, and Jayson Werth, Michael Morse and Danny Espinosa form a formidable middle of the order.

Add Ian Desmond and Wilson Ramos to that mix and the Nationals might not be too far away from contending over the next couple of seasons.

Because of their potential, the Nats will likely make a push for B.J. Upton, Michael Bourn or Colby Rasmus this week as a long-term solutions in center field. The moves don’t matter much for this season, but seeing as at least one of those three will likely be dealt, now is the time for the Nationals to strike.
The #22 is how he places us v. the rest of baseball on the need to trade.

oh well in five years the phillies will just buy the top FAs available and mix and match with some of their prospects.  they do it all the time and it works.

Would you say the same thing about the Baaaastaaaan Red Sux though?  That's exactly what they do.

EDIT: Didn't mean any snark here, just saying there is some validity to what Sliders* is saying.

I find it weird how he says Clippard is the only name on the rumor mill. Coffey and Marquis' names have been out there forever, and Rosenthal reported Desmond a week ago.

Potential Post-Season Impact Players

Washington Nationals: Tyler Clippard, Relief Pitcher
The Nationals have a lot of players available for acquisition, but the majority of them will not net much in return, Clippard included. However, the righty may be the most interesting player the team is willing to trade. For the second straight season, his strikeout rate has skyrocketed, now sitting at 33.8 percent on the season. Meanwhile, he has displayed a concomitant decrease in walks over that same time period, morphing from an out-of-control pitcher who could not get anyone to offer on his tosses into a dominant reliever who could be closing games were it not for a younger, also-dominant reliever on his club. As such, it seems the Nationals are at least listening to offers for Clippard, as well they should. The situation for trading Clippard is absolutely ideal:

-        He is a reliever who is actually good
-        He is young at age 26 and under team control for four more seasons.
-        He is being traded during the peak reliever value time, right around the trade deadline.

Among the teams interested are the Braves, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees. Among teams with at least a 10 percent chance of making the playoffs (according to the Playoff Odds Report), those teams rank first, tenth, third, and eighth in relief innings pitched, respectively. The Braves in particular are interested, in part to take some of the heat off of the overworked Craig Kimbrel and Johnny Venters. A word to the wise for teams in home run-heavy parks like Texas and New York, though: Clippard has allowed ground balls at a rate of only 27.7 percent and has allowed homers on 5.4 percent of contacted balls (2011 league average: 3.2 percent) for his career.

keep laughing minty/kevrock.

there's a reason the yankees/phillies/red sox are always in the postseason or at least in contention.

Recently for the Phillies but your point stands, as does mine.  It's too early to tell if the incompetence is finally gone from the FO so until it's proven otherwise I'm still in the LAI camp.

It would be pretty annoying if the Nats sat on their hands and didn't unload some of the guys on the roster.

Would suck to give up Marrero or Lombardozzi but I guess Marrero, at the minimum, is expandable.

hmm... send Marrero / Detwiler to Tampa for Upton and AA-level starter.  Then send Clippard to Texas for Mitch Moreland.

That takes us through the rest of the year with:

Upton
Werth
Zimmerman
Morse
Moreland
Ramos
Espinosa
Desmond

Chris Davis is another option too.

could be looking @ one of the cuse relievers and maybe they were there to see milone/peacock the other day.
