Also Balester has proven that he cannot be trusted to pitch in any sort of close game so I think he is out of the picture.

Balester/Coffey would generally only be looked at in the 6th/7th. With 5 guys for the 7/8/9, they wouldn't be called on much at the end of a game.

As far as comp status ... I thought Coffey slipped from B status around mid season? Still, we'd have to offer arbitration, and I'm pretty sure he'd accept it. I wouldn't count on a pick for him, even if he did qualify.

Coffey is close to being a class B.  He could still become one becuase the final elias rankings have not come out yet.  Also, most players don't accept arbitration becuase that pins them down to negotiating with only one team.

It's also a guaranteed contract.

Some people will take guaranteed money and remain in a familiar situation, rather than risk less money for new surroundings. I haven't heard anything specifically from Coffey but I'm sure he'd want to come back.

Even if players want to come back though they still almost always decline arbitration just so they have options.

What about Gomes and Nix?  Aren't they borderline type B's also?

Last year here are the guys that we had fighting for bullpen jobs:

Storen
Burnett
Clippard
Coffey
Slaten
H-Rod
Gaudin
Broderick
Stammen
Maya

And that is of the top of my head.  Competition is a good thing and pitching depth is something that you can't have enough of.

You realize you just made the argument why Balester will be in the picture, right?

Only if you concede that Balester provides good competition and depth.  :hang:

Weren't Gaudin and Maya in consideration?

Slaten and Burnett were in there too. That just makes Balester one more piece that needs to be replaced. We should cut the fat if we really want to improve.

Maya is going to be here until the bitter end of his contract.

If Coffey is a Type B, chances are nobody will offer him a major league contract.

The day before the Angels GM resigned, he talked about trading an outfielder ...

Okay.  You guys got me, but the point I was trying to make is that we should not stop trying to aquire relievers.  They are a good thing to be deep in.   They also can fetch a decent amount at the deadline.  If we have the chance to acquire good relievers at a good pics then by all means go for it.

We really should have picked up Casey ASSMAN Kotchman instead of Adam LaDouche.

but then what if Kotchman got injured and LaRoche had a good season?

We'd be saying "we really should have picked up Adam LaCrush instead of Casey ASSMAN Kotchman"

I actually liked Kotchman better than LaDouche before either were signed.  For some reason I can't stand LaDouche.

true and if zimmerman was a bust we'd be saying we should have drafted Braun, but he wasn't a bust and it was a great pick just like LaRoche does suck and it was a horrible signing

I don't believe a player win in arbitration is a guaranteed contract.  Wasn't that Shawn Hill's fate - beat the Nats in arb and cut in the spring before > 1/5 of the contract was guaranteed.

No downside to another team offering a type B a contract.  The compensation is not a team pick.  It is a supplemental pick.

Yeah, for some reason I thought it was a second round and not a sup.

While I did not know that was true, I was speaking more about a guarantee in that if he accepts, he's got the deal and the dollar amount.

Declining to seek a contract from somewhere else leaves him open to many factors - less money, a minor league deal, a weaker team, etc. Nothing is guaranteed in that situation.
