Some people want CJ Wilson, others think he'll be massively over paid, Some want fielder, some think he's too husky and we don't need a 1b. There is Reyes, but he'll get a lot of money for more years than he'll be useful. There are no lead off CFs available. I'd like to make a run at fielder

You, thinking about free agency this offseason, we're closing in on being in the top half of the standings, ie losing our #1 pick as compensation for signing a Type A free agent.

Right now, we're 16th. There are a clump of four or five teams, about .500, around us. Stunningly, we could finish in the top half of the standings! Whoda thought that would happen this season???

We've achieved mediocrity.

This would be great for us and probably an ideal scenario. Trade Lannan and Detwiler to the Yankees for Gardner. Then sign one of the better free agent pitchers out there and bring CMW back.

sometimes trades make too much sense, but Lannan (realistically, probably a number 4 in the al east, but very consistent) for Gardner a high OBP speed guy, but who plays left (9 starts in center this year, 38 last year) without power. The trade would address both team's needs without swapping stars

I highly doubt it.

Brett Gardner is very highly though of in the Yankees organization, especially by Cashman. He turned down Crawford because he thought he had the same player in Gardner. On top of that, they don't have someone who can come in and start right away to fill that void. I really don't see that happening.

But as a Nats fan, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Awesome. I'm completely okay with signing Wilson. Even though I know we'll have to vastly overpay.

Trade some of our pitching for a rangy CFer. Let Marrero duke it out with Laroche for first base. When Harper comes up, we'll figure out what to do with him then.

I also have my doubts, since I see enough Gardner, living in NYC, to know how valuable he is. Still, the Yankees pitching is "iffy". There is Sabatha, and maybe the new guy, Nova, and after that the starters look like Phil Hughes and AJ Burnett and old Bartolo Colon. That probably doesn't carry you deep into the playoffs. Relievers don't jump into my mind, other than Mo, of course. Young Robertson looks like a maybe.

Seems like the Yankees are desperate for pitching, and I'd love to have Gardner leading off for the Nats. (Call it baseball wishing).

I call it "competitive respectability", and getting better.

The team has pitching, both starters and relievers, and Lannan is the oldest of the starters. (Seems like yesterday he was breaking in and breaking wrists). I don't think the Nats need Wilson as much as they need hitting. Fielder doesn't fit, and Pujols is going to stay in St Louis. Sure, I would pay a lot of Lerner-money, and give up a pick, for Pujols, but (a) it seems unlikely, and (b) the Nats need a leadoff hitter...especially a guy who plays CF.

(And Desmond and Espinosa must hit better. I'd trade five or six Espinosa HRs for about 60 fewer strikeouts and an extra 20 walks)

And..as has been pointed out on here before, Washington DC is the birthplace of straight edge. Wilson is a follower of the straight edge lifestyle.

Buerhle could be a solid pickup for a few years. I also still like Edwin Jackson. Both those guys will cost about half as much as CJ Wilson and they'd be a lot less risky.

Jackson may be a bit more than half the cost of Wilson.
