According to UZR for 2011 in LF Gomes has been worth 1.2 runs, Nix -3.6 runs, and Morse -8.2 runs. So Morse in his time in LF this season has been awful. As far as their career numbers go Nix is the only one that is positive and Gomes is about half as less bad as Morse but still not good.

Just wanted to add, the one name that could be decent, is Roy Oswalt. With their front three and the emergence of Worley, they probably won't pick up Oswalt's option.

I wouldn't mind a two year deal for Oswalt. I dont necessarily expect the 2010 Oswalt, but he's still a solid veteran that would help us now, and likely will not require a long term contract. Two years would allow us to move him at either trade deadline but even if he stayed for two years, he'd be up for FA again, just as Purke, Meyer and Solis(and potentially Cole/Ray) are ready to make their mark at the big league level.

Strasburg, Zimmermann, Oswalt, and Lannan is a very solid front 4. I'd then go with a kid in the 5 spot(Ideally Peacock, because he's got the highest upside of the current crop but he might be able to learn some things from Oswalt). But Id be confident with Peacock or Detwiler in that 5 spot. Or even bring Wang back as well, and if he gets beat out, trade him near the end of ST.

Right now, we have about the 18th best record, so our pick would be protected were we to sign a Type A and the compensation system remain the same. I'd never give Philly our #1, but the 2d rounder I'd think about.

Personally, if he wanted to stay on the east coast, I would look at Bedard on a much lower contract with incentives. I like lefties in this division. I also think a deal for Wandy might be workable.

I admittedly didn't even think of compensation status. Do you even get a chance for comp, if you decline a players option? I know he becomes a free agent, but it seems like a similar thing to not offering arbitration? I know they're different things, but I don't know all the specifics, especially with 10 year plus free agents.

I wouldnt mind Bedard either. I know there's a big health concern, but if he's healthy, he helps us and we can move him. If he goes down at any point, we have a few kids that can come up to replace him short term(or long term, whatever the case may be). It'd likely at least give Peacock/Milone a little more seasoning in AAA.

After the offensive display against the fins, I'm starting to think it will take something like fielder hitting between zimm and morse to make this offense respectible

We need a leadoff hitter and we need first half Espinosa to come back. A healthy Zimmerman coupled with production from first base and our offense isn't so bad.

But I wouldn't mind fielder.

a lead-off hitter with a high OBP is numero uno.

FWIW, here are the top OF's with high OBP that could be available:

Berkman - .409 - not quite what we need, but putting him in RF and moving Werth to CF could be a nice move until Harper is ready though it still leaves us needing a lead-off hitter, which means Desmond again since we don't have any other open positions.
Fowler - .362 - would love to see the Nats make a run at him, the Rockies have depth and could be willing to trade him
S. Smith - .343 - if not Fowler....
J. Pierre - .335 FA, but he's old and had a horrible 1st half
LoMo - .330 - could he bat leadoff? Would the Marlins move him given everything that's happened this year?

I would be shocked if the Rockies traded Fowler. What his bat lacks his defense and range more than make up for. Especially there.

LoMo is a LFer at best.

Morrison in LF, Werth in CF, and Morse in RF could be a pretty solid OF.

Are you sure Nix has enough time logged at LF for it to stabilize? Let's be honest, they're all pretty bad out there.

I agree with Morse being the worse, though.

I doubt they go for it. Morrse and Espinosa are the opposite of the kind of player Billy Beans likes. High strike outs and low walks are a no go for Mr Beane. On top of that, they have first base prospects that are almost major league ready. Finally, Morse is due arbitration this offseason. He'll get a big pay hike. I doubt that the A's will want to pay it.

Now, if we offered someone like Norris and Lombardozzi and maybe a pitching prospect, they should be willing to listen.

Left Field tends to be like First Base, defense is secondary. Braun's defense is average to below average. But who cares because he's a .300+ 30HR 30SB guy. Josh Willingham, Alfonso Soriano, Logan Morrison, Alex Gordon and Matt Holliday. You think anyone cares about their defense? No.

Morse will get a little bit better at LF and he'll be serviceable. What the Nats need to do is get that rangy CFer to help Morse out as much as possible. Werth in CF is not a good idea. Not on a long term basis.

There's also rumors of the Royals being willing to deal Melky for pitching.

I think the Royals are much more likely to trade Melky than they are Cain.

I don't want to trade Morse. Despite the fail last night with the GIDP, he's been our only reliable bat other than Zim. I don't think we'd have anyone to play LF without him other than Bernie unless we signed someone - and no one out there is as good as Morse.

Now if we traded for Morrison, I'd be all for trading Morse for an upgrade elsewhere - either CF or in the rotation.

i think he was statistically the worst player in baseball last season.

Someone worth keeping an eye on is DeJesus. MLBTR has a little article on him. He had a down year and is likely to hit free agency and could probably get him fairly cheaply for a year or two.

While I think his offense is a lot better than what he showed this year and that he could fit in as a high OBP leadoff hitter, I don't think DeJesus has the great range in center many here are looking for in a player to play next to Morse. He is the type of OF whose defense is a plus in right or left but merely average in CF. you may know him from KC and I think that was his rep there.

I think we need a really good defensive CF, even if it comes at the expense of some offense. If that means we start Rick Ankiel again and he's the best we can do, so be it.

BJ Upton will be available. If we don't get Crisp, he may be the next best option that won't cost a ton to acquire.

can we afford the offense- we've scored the 5th fewest runs in the NL this year, have the 3rd worst average, 4th worst OBP, and the 6th worst SLG

What about the Nats offense makes you think this team can afford the luxury of a defense first spot in the lineup?
