Again, as you mentioned, if you don't get good left handed batters, isn't it better to have right handed batters?  There's a bigger pool of right handed batters so wouldn't it seem likely that you'd get better, although not that good, right handed batters?

Breaking it down:

  • A bad right handed batter would be good against left handed pitchers
  • A bad right handed batter would be below average against right handed pitchers
  • A bad left handed batter would be good against right handed pitchers
  • A bad left handed batter would be completely useless against left handed pitchers

Again, when you're picking through the bottom of the barrel (as we always are) wouldn't this tip the scales in favor of right handed batters?  We're not talking about all-time greats here, remember.

What exactly is the purpose of a left handed batter.  Yes, they're supposed to hit right handed batters, REALLY well but right handed batters hit right handed pitchers really well because that's most of what they've faced their entire baseball lives because most pitchers are right handed.

Right handed batters hit very well against left handed pitchers but, as a rule, left handed batter hit left handed pitchers really badly.  Is the difference between most right bat - right pitch and left bat - right pitch so great that you'd want so many left handed batters on your roster, ever?

I've never built a major league roster but I'd think you'd want, at most, two left handed batters plus one switch hitter, nothing like this team currently has.  You should be able build a lineup with all right handed batters to face both left and right handed pitchers.

I read an article a long time ago that tried to prove that left handers were better at the plate and on the mound. It was a bullcrap contradictory piece. I was a senior in HS when I read it and in totally defiance I stopped switch hitting and batted exclusively right handed from there on. I felt more comfortable hitting right handed anyway. The only difference was that I had more power as a lefty but struck out (and flied out) much more frequently hitting left handed so I hit for better average hitting right handed.

The advantage to hitting from the opposite side of the hand of the pitcher is you can't really get busted in with a fastball, the ball has to come across the body and in to your zone, so you SHOULD be able to tee off before it jams you.

As for why lefties have such a tough time with other lefties, it's simple. They just don't have much history facing off against left handed pitchers. All their life they grew up facing right handed pitchers. Then, when they get to college/pro, they see the mystical left handed pitcher and are helpless at the plate.

Some adjust, some don't. You want left handed hitters, because though left handed pitching may own them in head to head match-ups, the majority of pitchers seen are going to be right handed, so they'll likely have the platoon advantage.

You'd think it would be working out better for us, wouldn't you?  :?

Seriously, going into the spring, we already had Bernadina and Morgan.  We signed LaRoche, Nix, Ankiel, Cora and Stairs.  Needless to say, that's not a list of all-time great lefties.

I see, by the way, that Ray did not get fired last night for his direct color commentary.

The pitcher's strategy is to walk the bases loaded, then let our lack of offense bail him out.

Book it.

They probably had no one to replace him on such short notice.

AZ radio guys wouldn't stop talking about how they thought Morse was taller than his listed 6' 5" and it sounded like he's closer to Paul Bunyan sized.

They wouldn't fly him out to Arizona.

Franken-Wood probably isn't allowed on planes, as is. Too tall.

They didn't want to fly him to AZ because the airlines would charge an extra baggage fee for his hairpiece and Angelos didn't want to pay it.

He wouldn't need "extra" baggage.   He'd probably wear the same clothes for the rest of the road trip.
