It wasn't all "imaginary" money. The Mets did generate a lot of revenue. It's not like Wilpon didn't lose money with Madoff. Without Madoff, they still would have spent quite a bit of money.

Besides, it's not like this franchise is known for it's brilliantly smooth operation
