Add Auburn to the Nats affiliate playoff list.  Coincidentally, they play Vermont, our former short-season affiliate, in the first round.

Teaching them to win right off the bat is fantastic

Anyone know the reason why the Chiefs have a T-shirt in their shop with Chiefs Spelled out in Sign Languge?  I like the concept.  But as far as I know they are the only ones merchandising this way.  I've written an email to their merchandizing department but was wondering if anyone here knew.

Thank you for your interest! As buyer for the team I feel a need to appeal to all kinds of customers. The Syracuse Chiefs are committed to serving a diversified community, the hearing impaired included. It has been my goal to accomplish that and this year I was able to find a company to produce the shirts. We also have a Chiefs shirt in Spanish. Baseball spans many generations and many kinds of people and I hope Chiefs baseball will always do their part in making everyone a fan! Nothing made me happier this year then to see a small hearing impaired child connect with that shirt and put the biggest smile on his face because of that connection. Hope this answers your question and we hope you will continue to support our organization.

Karns had a rough outing tonight for Auburn in the first playoff game, really struggled with runners on base.  He did have 7 SO through 4.2 innings, but also gave up 5 runs.  It does not help that Auburn has been dominated by Vermont's pitcher tonight, who has 9 Ks through 5 innings so far.  Hopefully the Doubledays can make a comeback against our former affiliate, though it sounds like quite a crowd in Vermont tonight.

Interesting note:  Auburn is coached by last year's Potomac coach Gary Cathcart, who led the P-Nats to a championship.

The Washington Nationals did not waste any time last fall when Clint Hurdle was named manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tony Beasley had been the Pirates' third-base coach, and the Nationals hoped he'd be available as Hurdle brought in his own staff.

"It was a quick call for me," said Doug Harris, director of player development for the Nationals. "Within 24 hours we were having a dialogue with Tony."

A former Minor League infielder for the Pirates and Orioles, Beasley was named Harrisburg's manager for the 2011 season and promptly led the team to 80 wins and a division title. It will be the sixth trip to postseason play in six tries for Beasley as a Minor League manager.

"I try not to take too much credit for it," said Beasley, whose team clinched the division last week with a 10-0 win over Portland as Stephen Strasburg made a rehab start. "Good players make us look like good managers. I let the guys have fun and keep them accountable. I've really enjoyed this season. To come back and manage is something I wanted to do."

"An incredible addition," Harris said last week of Beasley. "We are blessed to have him here. As good as a baseball man he is, he's an even better person. He's a tremendous motivator. He has a sense of peace that permeates through the clubhouse. At the same time he can be fiery if need be."

Beasley has had to deal with increased media this year with the arrival of outfielder Bryce Harper, who was promoted to Harrisburg from Hagerstown in the middle of the season, and then for Strasburg's rehab. He pointed to the team's head-up play as a big reason for its success.

"One of the keys is we've been very good on the bases and very aggressive," said Beasley, whose team had 150 steals while getting caught 47 times. "We've taken advantage of mistakes. We don't just run wild. We run smart."

In brief

Harper watch: Doug Harris, the Nationals' director of player development, said there's a chance Bryce Harper, who went on the disabled list Aug. 20, could see action in the playoffs. "We'll be cautious," he said. Harper, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 Draft, hit .256 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 129 at-bats for Harrisburg before injuring his right hamstring.

You win with pitching: Harrisburg finished with the best record in the Eastern League despite ranking second-to-last in batting at .249. The Senators compensated with the second-lowest ERA in the circuit (3.61). Richmond, Harrisburg's first-round opponent, was last in the league in hitting (.247) and first in ERA (3.46).

Moore of the same: Harrisburg first baseman Tyler Moore had 31 home runs and 90 RBIs to lead the league in both categories. He hit .300 with five doubles and three homers in his last 10 games with nine RBIs in 30 at-bats.

Frederick 5, Potomac 1: Potomac trails in the series, 2-1, and is one loss away from ending their season. Destin Hood went 1 for 4 with a home run, one of three P-Nats hits. Evan Bronson allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings on seven hits and two walks, striking out three. Game 4 is Sunday in Potomac at 1:05 p.m.

Richmond 4, Harrisburg 2 (11 innings): The Senators fell behind in the series 2-0, one loss from elimination. Shairon Martins allowed no runs in seven innings on one hit and four walks, striking out nine. Rafael Martin allowed two runs in the eighth inning. Derek Norris went 1 for 4 with a home run and a walk. Game 3 is at 1:05 p.m. Sunday in Richmond.

I'm guessing Martis gets a shot at the 5th starter slot next year.
