Nats stuff from the BA Chat that's going on now:

Quote
ryan (DC): Given, the Nats signings on Monday, they have the top player from the 2010 draft (Harper), many beleive the top player from the 2011 draft (Rendon) and Purke could have been in the mix for the top player in the 2012 draft. Add to that improved depth, AJ Cole, Goodwin, and Meyer, and development of other players in the system, Peacok, Hood, Lombardozzi and Marrero. What would the Nats Top 10 look like now and how would ther system rank?

Jim Callis: Off the top of my head, I'd start their Top 10 like this: Harper, Rendon, Peacock, Cole, Meyer, Goodwin, Purke (move him up if he proves to be healthy). Looks like a possible top-five system, definite top-10.

Matt (Va): Jim, the Nats obviously had one of the better drafts. Three or four years down the line do they have a chance to compete for the NL East?

Jim Callis: Won't take that long, especially if Strasburg and Harper become everything they're supposed to

@Jaypers413 (IL): Jim - please rank these events in order of "shock" factor - 1) Purke signing, 2) Bell signing, 3) Goodwin's bonus, 4) Cole not getting a big league deal. Thanks.

Jim Callis: Interesting. In order from most to least shocking: Bell, Purke, Goodwin (all shocks), Cole (not really at all). I covered Bell already. I didn't think there was anyway the Nationals would come up with a number high enough to sign Purke when he hadn't pitched in a game this summer, but they did. Goodwin's $3 million dropped a lot of jaws, though the industry chalked that up to the tight Mike Rizzo-Scott Boras relationship (see Jayson Werth, among many examples). It really doesn't matter whether a guy gets paid huge money as a bonus or in a big league deal. Cole set a draft record with an $8 million bonus, and he'll be earning big league salaries soon enough.

Nick (Maryland): What do you think the Nats do with Rendon? Do they move him to 2nd base?

Jim Callis: Assuming Ryan Zimmerman stays put, Rendon winds up at second base or on an outfield corner.

frank (oregon): jim, there's strong opinions from other baseball publications that bryce harper will be a .265 caliber hitter at the ML level. i know you felt that way at one point as well, but do you still? i find it hard to believe an 18 y.o. that nearly hit .320 in full season ball will only have an average hit tool. jason heyward hit .323 in the SAL league at the same age harper hit .318 and heyward was projected as a 70 or better bat. what gives?

Jim Callis: He has a big swing of times, and you're right, I saw him as more of an average hitter with some swing and miss. I'm giving him more credit than that now after his performance this year. You have to.

I think we'll be a top 5 system once BA sits down and looks at everything.

I wonder if Boras sees Rizzo as a walking, talking piggy bank?

Keyes with a three run HR.  His second in as many nights.

Norris with his 17th HR tonight as well. Harrisburg has a one game lead in their division.

I wonder if Boras can see this and see the Lerners as cheap?

Forgive my ignorance but I've seen this before and can only assume it's an inside joke. Anyone care to let me in on it?

Damn, good  for him. He's pitching great in AA so far, better than I expected. Sleeper prospect for sure.

I think Rosenbaum is a better prospect than Lannan was. Guys like "The Rosen" only add icing to our cake of prospects.

I believe someone mistakenly referred to another prospect as Hayes. Hayes is now an inside joke as being one of if not our best prospect.

Unfortunately for Rosenbaum, the team is in much better standing now than it was for Lannan years ago. With guys like Peacock, Solis, Cole, Ray, Meyer, and Purke, him and Milone aren't going to get as many opportunities as Lannan did.

Peacock went 7 innings? Can't be, all the self proclaimed experts say he's a relief pitcher. I'm sure they say the same about Rosenbaum.

I'm not agreeing with the experts, but it should be noted that Peacock had 6 Ks and 1 BB through 5 innings.  He ended with 6 Ks and 5 BBs.  The walks have become a pretty big issue for him at AAA.

Which is why I find it so weird. In AA he wasn't tricking hitters into swinging at balls, he was pounding the zone with strikes.

He's probably not ready for the majors until he figures out AAA.  There's not really any rush to get him up here.  I'd just leave him there through September and probably to start next season, too.

milb ends the first week of September unless Syracuse makes the playoffs.  He probably has 2-3 starts left in the minors this year.

I am hoping for the best from Peacock, but the difference between Triple-A and the majors is pretty damn big.

What Peacock needs to demonstrate if/when he makes the majors is that he can make the adjustments necessary to counter how hitters will approach him after they see him the first time.

The reason you see the reliever tag is that there are concerns about his secondary stuff in the majors. If he cannot demonstrate a solid second and third pitch, hitters will just sit on his fastball.

He appears to have improved the secondary offerings but if there are not three pitches there, he can expect to max out as a back of the rotation guy or ... a reliever

Meyers pitched a gem at Fenway....

6.0 ings 5 hits 1 ER 1 BB 4 K

Seems like he has figured it out in AAA. What are the Nats going to do with him?

Does anyone know of a reliable way to check the schedule of starting pitchers for the minor league affiliates, particularly Hagerstown?  I was aiming to see an A.J. Cole start, but their rotation has been so fluid this year, so I can't be certain whether he'll start on the 24th or 25th (or possibly later).

Can you just call the ticketing office and ask?
