at least on the NE regional, Amtrak food is inedible

the food is pretty bad on Acela too (microwaved burgers), but hey, they have beer!

The dome car is the place to be on long domestic train rides...just pack some booze and a picnic.

There are some pretty fly passenger trains elsewhere, though.  The Blue Train in South Africa could make a Rockefeller blush.

How does it compare to airline food?
Except for the snacks it's been decades since I had airline food.

If he has too many cheeseburgers and Doritos, he'll show up to camp looking like Shairon Martis.

I recently took an Amtrak train from NY to DC and ordered one of the cheeseburgers.

It comes in a plastic bag and the guy put it in the microwave until it was 10,000 degrees.

It looked and tasted like sh-t.

Never again.

Channeling your inner Woody Allen?
Classic. Annie Hall is where I heard it but I think this is an old Borscht Belt joke.

Had these. Probably the worst thing I ever ate in my life. But it was at a hospital dining room in the middle of the night. From a vending machine. It was that or starve.

On days when I forget or just am too lazy to pack lunch, that's what I end up stuck with out of the vending machine at work.  They aren't too bad if you just pull the patty out and heat it separately.  If you heat the bun too, it doesn't turn out well.

Take raman noodles to work. I'd rather eat China's industrial waste, then whatever that crap is in a vending machine.

Honestly, no. I do not recall anyone saying that before so I didn't steal it.

I'm not much of a movie buff.

He says it in Annie Hall, quoting an old vaudeville line about two old ladies complaining about the food in the hotel.  He then compares it to life.

living in D.C. and flying mostly United, the only snacks you get are the ones you bring or from the $5.00 snack box they sell you on board.  I was shocked when I flew Jet Blue recently and they handed me two bags of chips.

Jet Blue, and even Southwest to a certain extent, is what flying should be.  It's all about not using a hub system.  Keeps costs down and gives you amenities that the old guard have to charge for just to try and stay afloat.

Usually they have "home made" things like chicken salad on 7 grain bread, which is good.  But sometimes it's just Dale Earnhardt Jr. Burgers or Pierre Burgers

Or maybe a Big Az Rack-o-ribs

Just for you, I chose the Big Az Chicken for lunch.  I'll try to sneak some pics with the iPhone....
