Ugly speculating by Cafardo today about how the Phillies and Red Sox line up for trading with each other to plug gaps.  The Red Sox have two MIs (Scutaro and Lowrie) and two RH OFs (McDonald and Cameron) to bridge a bit for Utley and to platoon with Francisco for Brown, and the Phillies have Blanton. Red Sox could put Dice-K in a deal, who might succeed in the NL, and Blanton has worked with the Red Sox's pitching coach in the past in Oakland.

Blanton would get destroyed in the AL East.

Freddy Garcia got rocked against a B level Minnesota team.  Marquis belongs on the Yankees.  The Yanks just don't realize it yet.

Not Lowrie, I/M/O.  more likely Scutaro.  A one year player to backfill for a year of Utley. I'm not  a Blanton fan. I'd  rather try to limp along and see if Pedro would come back for the 2d half of the year.

should we just hand Boston the WS trophy now?

Quote
Boston OF Jacoby Ellsbury had a ridiculously good game on Saturday against the Marlins in Grapefruit League action. Ellsbury went 3 for 3 from the leadoff spot in the order. He doubled in his first two at-bats and then launched a massive home run in his third off Josh Johnson. "He hit that home run, that was a pretty swing," manager Terry Francona said. "That ball jumped out in a hurry. So I think it's pretty safe to say he feels pretty good about himself at the plate." He scored three runs and drove in three runs and is batting .440 on the spring.

A Lerner apologist's work is never done.

cause spending money on injured crap, just so you can say you spent it is always the wisest course of action.

I'd love for the Lerners to spend millions of dollars to improve our disabled list.

Right. Because it really is my philosophy that spending money (on any player irrespective of talent) is what guarantees winning and ensures said player will instantly become a beast! I remember when I endorsed the idea that signing the likes of Bergmann, Logan, Schneider, Chico, Langerhans, Jimenez and Casto to multi million dollar deals would net us the pennant.

Beckett was knocked around yesterday by the Puddle Pirates.  Their starting rotation might have as many question marks at the Yankees.

RHP Joel Hanrahan, the #Pirates designated closer, has allowed 3 HR & 6 R in 4 2/3 innings this spring.

Evan Meek's value is climbing.

I am completely shocked that ESPN is broadcasting NYY @ Red Sox for its first spring training game.  Change of pace.  Good to see new guys like Crawford, Gonzalez, Soriano, and few others that you don't see too often.

Of course not.   One never gets to see Jeter, A-Rod, CC and the like unless you live in NY.  What a rare treat for us out of towners.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/tom_verducci/03/15/playoff.surprises/index.html

Verducci article on 5 teams with the best chances to go from sub .500 records to the playoffs.

Both the Cubs and Marlins make the list.  Nats make kind of an 'honarable mention' list at the end.

The Cubs will be terrible again this year, I'm betting.  Their starting rotation will disappoint and their highest paid position players like Soriano and Ramirez and Fukodome and Pena will probably also not live up to expectations.

The Marlins - If everything goes well for them, they could make some noise if either Atlanta or Philly is surprisingly bad (generally too young and too old, respectively).  The Marlins could just as easily crater, though, if their young players have slumps in their second seasons or Hanley decides he's not going to cooperate for extended periods of time.

Joba has a strained left gut.  I mean strained left oblique.

Just send us something good for Marquis, Cashman.  You know you want to.

The Marlins don't really have a CF.

Coughlan's shoulder might be messed up.
