that the Red Sox really.really wanted.

I wonder if Theo finds it hard to sit with all of Bristol,Connecticut kissing his ass 24/7.
So you'll love Dave Cameron's chat on the source I cite too much today:

Quote
12:25  [Comment From Josh GJosh G: ]
If you were in Mike Rizzo's position would you have signed Werth or tried to sign Zimmerman to a Tulo-esque extension? (Or neither)
Wednesday December 22, 2010 12:25 Josh G
12:25  Dave Cameron: Neither. I get that they wanted another franchise-type player, but if they were going to throw that kind of money around, they should have gone after Crawford instead.

For $126 million the Lerners could have funded a research program to clone Babe Ruth in his prime and have 5 Ruths pitching and 8 Ruths as position players.

They were gonna do that with Adam Dunn, but then they fired Bowden. That's why there was a dearth of free agent signings.

They would get it wrong and end up with

a bunch of Ruth Ginsburgs running around Nats Park

Wainwright.

Doesn't he have an option that the Cardinals would be morons to not exercise?

There's potential you could have Pujols and Fielder on market.  It's also possible one or both of Carpenter and Wainwright will be too.  Oswalt could extend in Philly, retire or hit FA.

Others are: Jose Bautista, Jimmy Rollins (the first of the Philly guys), Buehrle, Heath Bell, Wandy Rodriguez, Papelbon.

And... Josh Willingham.

Wainwright   :az:

the others, not so much (i hold no illusions of Pujols hitting the market).

Werth should be the most motivated player in MLB this off-season, after hearing:

-The Nats get ripped for overpaying
-People claim that Werth will decline
-People claim that Werth was a roleplayer protected by the Phillies lineup

on top of his apparent distaste for Cliff Lee's decision and the Phillies decision to offer him a contract significantly under what other teams were willing to pay him.

team options in 2012 and 2013.  But if he has another year like last, they are probably looking at $20 million in arbitration, plus they have to pay for Carpenter who they have a team option on in 2012, and the guy at 1B.   I can't imagine they'll have both Wainwright and Carpenter come opening day 2012.

Couldn't you have said almost the same exact thing for Albert Haynesworth?

Wainwright is 28 Carpenter is 35 unless Wainwright breaks down Carpy is most likely gone.

Not really, no.

Well actually, if they played the same sport... no.

In most other markets, there would be a fan rebellion.   But here, we have a bunch of golf clapping attorneys and a fanbase than has amazingly bought into Snyder's hype for more than a decade.    But the Lerners are even worse, because at least Snyder's trying to win.

Bravo, bravo.

The Lerners are not worse than Snyder.  The Redskins are so predictable.  They will go out and trade for and draft a new quarterback and he will suck because of the lack of receivers, running backs, and an offensive line.  Then the coach and the media will all jump on the 'this guy sucks' campaign.  That process will be repeated in 2012, 2013....

The Lerners, I think, are actually learning from the mistakes they've made.  They've put Rizzo in charge, and will see what he can do.  Rizzo has a discernible plan, which is already a step forward from what they had under Bowden and what the Redskins have had for ten years.

Snyder's made the playoffs 3 times, 2 playoff wins, and had 6 .500+ seasons. You want to know how many times the Nationals sniffed .500 under the Lerners? The same amount as you and I have.

Anyone even insinuating that the Lerners are worse than Snyder should be banned from the board.  At the very least, give them credit for a great gameday experience at Nationals Park.  FedEx Field is the worst gameday experience in the NFL.  When I still lived in the area, I repeatedly turned down free luxury suite tickets to 'Skins games from a friend to avoid dealing with that debacle.
To be fair to Snyder, part of the awful experience is not his fault. He didn't choose the location nor the traffic associated with that location.

But the Nationals gameday experience isn't that much to brag about. Overpriced tickets, overpriced concessions and parking to watch a bad product on the field.
