But would it actually have taken 56 if they were willing to offer the 4th year?
Maybe not if they were willing to offer a fourth year during his slump early in the year or during spring training, but towards the end of the season I think Dunn already knew he was going to declare free agency.  And if he got a 4/$56m offer from someone else I doubt he would have settled for less here.  He's not stupid, he knows he's going to DH eventually with the White Sox, but realistically we probably would have traded him to a team that needed a DH after a few years here anyway.  I only wish we had traded him this summer to a contender, we might have gotten something more valuable than a draft pick.

Yeah, I'm pissed at the Lerners too.

About Potomac listing the players: Strasburg and Harper were obvious. Signing Zimmerman to an extension was obvious. Storen was pretty much an obvious. The rest were good hunting.

I'm hating on the Lerners.

so by paying money for draft picks they aren't cheap? Never mind the lack of big name international or free agent signings

Did they pay for picks prior to 09?

Yunesky Maya?

Maya signed for 8 Million. That says all you need to know about him. Before 09, the Lerners track record was a few overslots in 2007 and being too cheap to sign Aaron Crow in 2008

As I've said many times, I don't really care who it is.  But I feel this thread is the logical counterpart to all the LAC threads since *someone* has to be responsible.

firemikerizzo.com is, oddly, already taken.

firemikerizzo.com should be available soon.  According to godaddy.com, the registration expired in September 2010 and is currently in the Redemption Period.

And yet the "conventional wisdom" will claim cheap owners.  You guys can't have it both ways.

You want us to give them credit for signing the guys they drafted? You're kidding right?

The funny thing is that the Nats were cheap on draft picks before last draft (Crow, Holder, Storen).

They allowed drafting guys that broke all time signing bonus records and paid through the nose on the 2010 draft as a whole.

It doesn't absolve them of cheap moments before but it is more than they were willing to do with Bowden in charge (the Guzman, Young and Kearns deals may have had a lot to do with that).

The evidence that the LAC is that the teams 2011 payroll is most likely going to be under the 2006 payroll the Lerners inherited from MLB. You know the same MLB that ran the Expos/nats on the cheap. How do they justify no payroll increase in 5 years?

Being cheap in a rich market is foolish.

The argument that dropping player x or y "frees up" this or that million in salary indicates:

- the person making the argument thinks the Nats operate on an allowance, the way I had an allowance when I was ten years old or

- the person thinks there is a salary cap in baseball. (???)

Rizzo might be OK, or might not, but I wish I could fire the Lerners.

If there's an existing thread, someone point me to it.  Otherwise have at.

(Image removed from quote.)

Maybe I am in the minority here but I have to say that I would stick with Mike Rizzo. Remember, the Lerners are his bosses. I know everybody is ticked off about Dunn leaving, but do not put this wholely on Rizzo. The Lerners were unwilling to put up the cash, when it would have cost only a little bit extra then what they offered to keep him.

It's meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, but honestly up until this point I think most fans were cautiously neutral on him.  I think this puts his public opinion poll firmly into negative territory.

He and Riggleman are only here for their low price tags, and they would not get the same jobs with any other team.  Rizzo is an overpromoted scout who comes across as a spineless, defensive middle manager who'll never rise any higher, and needs to kiss his boss's butt to keep a job he doesn't deserve.

If you fire Rizzo, there's some unqualified Rockies, or Diamondbacks, or Pirates scout who'd be hired to take his place.   There might be a winning season or two for this org. in the next 10 years, but that's about the most anyone can hope for with this ownership.

I actually agree with the decision to let Dunn walk, and the non-trade as well. Rizzo's fine by me.

Rizzo is a genius.

He is now going to sign Paul Konerko, using the money that we save on Dunn. The Sox can't sign Konerko because they've spent the money on Dunn.  Konerko is better than Dunn. But the best part: we get to keep the draft picks and we don't lose any picks!

Supposedly the White Sox were going to be able to sign 2 of the 3 of: Dunn, Konerko, and Buerhle.

I understand the reasoning to let Dunn go...

...If we make improvements in other areas to go along with it.

We would lose our second round pick.

Konerko is worse than Dunn in the field, as well.
