Prior to this season, his BB/9 was 3.78.

Hes been placed on the IL.

And also, we got basically nothing for Harper leaving.

Would you rather have him or the draft pick the Nats are Getting. I honestly don’t know the answer. Just asking.

Bukauskas. He was taken 15th overall. That the Astros were willing to throw in another prospect is icing on the cake.

Rizzo's 2018 class was almost 100% college seniors and almost every single one of them has horrible numbers so far :lmao:

Cate the only guy who looks like a prospect right now. lots of mediocre ERAs in low-A ball and guys OPS'ing .670

That's funny because there wasn't a person on this board who didn't applaud that trade and gloat over Giolito's struggles (then).
I recall quite a bit of grumbling.  (Not me, I liked the trade.)

As far as the position players, now that we're healthy (minus Zimmerman), things are clicking and the lineup is worthy of a playoff contender.  Max is Max, Stras has been healthy (knock on wood) and very good, and Corbin is what we hoped he'd be.  Hopefully Anibal can build off his last start and be solid.  We might need to pick up an extra starting pitcher down the line if we make a run for it, but I don't think it needs to be anybody costly.

The bullpen...with the hole we're in, I don't think Rizzo can wait until July to address it if we're going to try and make a run.  We'll lose too many winnable games and Doo's arm will fall off.  The thing is, do you do something NOW when we're 8 games under .500?  I think this team needs to continue to win games over the next few weeks, then perhaps Rizzo will be able to pull the trigger and try and acquire bullpen help.  We need guys that have multiple years control like we we acquired Doo and Madson.  Hopefully over the next few weeks we can get within 3 or 4 games of .500 and then seriously look at making moves.

I just looked at the upcoming schedule...I think this stretch through June 16th determines if Rizzo pushes to make moves and contend or basically holds and starts to sell off some pieces like last year.

3 @ Reds
2 vs White Sox
4 @ Padres
2 @ White Sox
4 vs DBacks

Then it's 7 home games with the Phls and Braves.  These next 15 games are against so-so to bad teams.  We need to win 10 at least, which would put us with 3 games of .500 with 7 big home games against division rivals on tap.  That is a chance to make a push.

Looking forward past those home games with the Phils/Braves, we hit another super easy stretch.  6 road games at Miami and Detroit then back home for 6 againt the Marlins and Royals then the AS Break.  Really, this schedule gives us a lot of games against bad teams mixed in with those 7 home games against the teams we're chasing and a chance to make up ground there.  I have no idea if this team can take advantage, but there's opportunity to climb back in it.  If that happens and bullpen help arrives, a WC spot seems possible.

I don't even know what assets we realistically have to trade for bullpen help. Kieboom is off the table, as is probably Garcia. Cate has meh value, Denaburg hasn't pitched a game, Sterling Sharp looks OK but we can't move too many guys who project as starters, that goes for Crowe as well.

They need to do better than that. I believe the only chance this team has is to out together a double digit win streak. There were 7 win streaks of nine games or more last year. Two of those were by the Mets and Pirates.

Here are a list of comebacks from deeper deficits than the Nats are in now.

Even that rate is bad.  That would be seventh among qualified pitchers in the majors last year.  Two of the guys above that have already been moved to the bullpen, despite having reasonably successful seasons last year.  Another one spent the first month of the season in the minors.

And yes, getting nothing is still worse than that.

Barry completely invents a narrative that the Nationals are "built by scounting"

If I was Mark Lerner I would tell every general manager I ever hire that it is a great gig because you are never questioned or second guessed.

as has been noted, for someone who is supposed to be a 'super scout' (or some variation therein), this organisations recent top draft picks have been so very woeful...

Svrluga must be paying Rizzo back for all the inside info. This team was built on a high budget payroll and top draft picks from tanking. The amateur scouting stinks. How many picks outside the top ten have been successful in ten years since Rizzo has been in charge? Looking through the draft history it's a whole lot of nothing after the first round and 50/50 in the first round.

Can Rizzo just stop making trades?

Lucas Giolito

8-1
2.54 ERA
2 CG
1 SO
67.1 innings
78 SO
20 BB
.950 WHIP

The list of former Nats who are playing at an All Star level for other teams is staggering.

Corbin has been amazing but we could have had Giolito on a cheap deal behind Max and Strasburg and used Corbins money to re-sign Harper.

Yea, that Steve Souza for Trea Turner/Joe Ross trade killed us.

I puts this on the Nats' pitcher development. I think it's possible Giolito wasn't ever going to do well here. It took 2 years for him to unlearn all the bad habits he picked up from the Nats.

When the last really good trade was almost five years ago it's time to move on from the position that the GM is any good at trades.

The Doolittle/Madson trade was a good trade that has benefitted both teams.

Your point?  You think that is valuable as a corner OF?  That's a dime a dozen.  Trea Turner is light years more valuable.  Anything else Joe Ross is able to give us is just a bonus.

Also, at the time of the Souza-Turner/Ross deal, we had Werth & Harper, and outfielders are pretty easy to find. Turner became our everyday SS and Ross was really solid in 2015 and 2016. That deal is a pretty huge win. Rizzo's best deals were during the rebuild and the first few years of contention when we were still finding out what exactly we had and we had a farm system full of dudes.

Further, the Eaton-Giolito/Lopez/Denning deal is pretty much a wash, we got unlucky with Eaton getting hurt, but when healthy he looked great. We needed a dynamic outfielder more than struggling RHPs. Context matters. We were seemingly one piece away from a World Series run and Eaton was supposed to be a huge ingredient to a great lineup.

I'm glad Giolito is figuring it out but I'd deal pitching prospects for an established outfielder (coming off a 6.1 WAR season and three straight 4 WAR seasons) anytime. Eaton just happened to get hurt.

So the deal is a wash, except the guy we traded for ended up doing nothing and the guy we traded away is turning into a star?

hindsight is always 20/20.  I think most GMs would do that deal 99 times out of a 100.

GMs are paid a lot of money to make better decisions than people at home. We have no way of knowing how other GMs viewed Eaton because none of them actually traded for him (unless you want to infer that no GM was as off on their valuation as rizzo because they didn’t pay for him).
