Washington #Nats GM Mike Rizzo is staying put in Washington where he already won one World Series title and is building towards another. His well-deserved extension will soon become official.

It is great news.    Even though Rizzo and Davey may have their faults (that hopefully they are learning from), they are both almost assuredly better than anyone else we could bring in at this point.   Keeping them around should keep the momentum going in the right way.

This is the way. Don't mess with the formula right now. Stability is key with ownership being "unstable".

So do we worry yet that nothing further has been reported after Nightengale's report 5 days ago?

Chris Getz is officially the new GM of the White Sox.

Come on Lerners, get this done.

Oh no, who will orchestrate the next bottoming out? Where can we find another sub .500 GM?

I imagine Rizzo has significant leverage, as the Lerners extended Martinez before Rizzo. Cant imagine too many GMs would want to come in and not get to hire their own manager.

I think Rizzo is slightly overrated, but this is daft.  He's technically under .500 if you count 2009, which was a team he inherited from Trader Jim right before the season started.  Even if you were to just take out the games Manny Acta managed in 2009, Rizzo is an above-.500 GM.

If one were to steel-man Rizzo instead of straw-man, he's the GM who oversaw a decade where the Nationals became the premiere team of the NL East.

He's also the GM who followed up a World Series win with three straight last in the division finishes and has a team currently in a dog fight for 4th in the division.

Really starting to worry that Rizzo is gone:

Via the Washington Post:

Johnny DiPuglia has resigned from his role as the Washington Nationals’ international scouting director, he confirmed to The Washington Post on Saturday morning. A longtime scout, DiPuglia had been with the club since 2009 — running its international operations the entire time — and was promoted to vice president and assistant general manager after the Nationals won the World Series in 2019.

The reasons for his resignation were not immediately known or provided by the team. DiPuglia declined further comment. General Manager Mike Rizzo did not immediately respond to requests for comment Saturday. A team spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter, citing a team policy to not publicly discuss personnel. DiPuglia was one of Rizzo’s closest confidants in the organization.

So the team didn't do well during the pandemic season and the season immediately after Trader Jim was fired.

Really great arguments - keep 'em coming.

Yeah, that's a pretty clear red flag.

I still think there are better possible GMs out there.  The problem is, I don't see them wanting to come here given the various problems.

How about 62-74? Gotta tank for that number 10 pick?

I’m worried that they are going cheap on Rizzo’s support staff and he’ll walk.

Lerners aren’t going to find anyone better to stand in during this transition period. A 3 year contract that bridges to new ownership would be perfect.

Yep. Do I recall correctly that it was Kasten who brought Rizzo into the organization? I do think in the long run the Nats would probably be better off with a GM who’s part of the newer wave of personnel mavens, but does anyone think current ownership would be able to select the right person anyway?

Im hoping this is the delay.

Like I said, I dont know if Rizzo doesnt know how to hire to implement and utilize analytics and advanced player development, or if the Lerners are not letting him buy what he needs.
